All,

We are hoping that you, as a previous sailor in Lake Townsend Yacht Club's annual Mayor's Cup Regatta, will want to participate in our 2019 event. Please see past commodore Robert Bouknight's email below with links to the registration form. We'd be delighted to have you sail with us again, and we'd be even more delighted if others from your Club would join us too, so please forward to other sailors in your club or fleet!  This year the Mayor's Cup is Race #2 in the new Carolina Series. And, on Friday afternoon, Al Schonborn from the Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club will lead a discussion of race strategy & tactics. He is a master sailor with multiple trophies to prove it.

If you are in need of housing,  let me know & I will try to match you up with a local LTYC member who'd be happy to offer a spare room for your stay.

Hope to see you at the Mayor's Cup!

Dear Lake Townsend Yacht Club members,

With all the rain we’ve experienced this spring, Lake Townsend will be full of water and ready for our 42nd Annual Mayor’ Cup Regatta on May31-June 2. As usual, we will have a Portsmouth handicap fleet as well as one design classes. Fleet winners get keeper trophies, and the winners of the Mayor’s Cup and Bryan Cup are engraved on those trophies to become part of club history.  Fleet vs. fleet rivalry for the cup!  We’re also looking forward to junior sailors competing in our regatta, showcasing their skills in their fleet of 420’s.

The regatta fee is $55, but only $50 if registered by 5/24, with an additional discount of $5 for US Sailing members. The regatta fee includes:

  • Continental Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday
  • One Saturday dinner, including adult beverages (additional Saturday dinner for Adults are $15 and FREE for children under 12). We had so many favorable comments about the dinner last year that we’ve asked Maria’s catering to once again serve their delicious potato salad, sesame-crusted chicken tenders, and thin sliced London Broil.
  • Sandwiches on Sunday

We had 36 entries last year, and we’re hoping for an even greater turnout this year, including many who’ve never sailed at Lake Townsend, because our race is one of six featured NC signature regattas that comprise the new Carolina Series. If you would be willing to host an out-of-town sailor or two at your home, please let me know ASAP so that we can offer this as an option to our guests and reinforce our reputation as friendly, welcoming club.

Finally, as an additional enticement this year, we’re super pleased to announce that everyone’s favorite uncle—“Uncle” Al Schonborn-- will be conducting a seminar on racing strategy and tactics on Friday afternoon, with time for some on the water practice to try out what you learned. His book is one of the most helpful and insightful books on sailboat racing that I have ever read, and trust me, I have read a lot of them.

Registration is now open via a link on the Mayor’s Cup section of our LTYC website (click here).  Please note that commemorative shirt orders must be placed by May 17.

Please pass this along to sailors you may know elsewhere.

Looking forward to another great event,

Robert Bouknight
