the 2008 AGM Minutes & Report
by CWA Secretary, Fred Black

Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the CANADIAN WAYFARER ASSOCIATION held at the TS&CC on 19 January 2008.

Chairman George Blanchard called the 17 assembled sailors to order at 1830 and drew their attention to his message, included with the meeting's preprints.  Also in that data pack were Fred Black's minutes of the 2007 meeting, which were adopted following a motion by Bill Fyfe / Kit Wallace.

Treasurer Mike Codd drew our attention to his Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet in the handout.  He was not overly concerned about our total equity having fallen from just over six thousand to just under four thousand dollars in the year, because there had been some carry-over bills and other one-time expenses, but should this trend continue we will need to look at a membership fee increase.  His motion to adopt the report was seconded by Bill and carried.

An updated list of our Executive and Fleet Captains had been distributed. George had been in touch with everyone to confirm their willingness to serve.  Special mention was made of our keen new West Coast rep., Nick Parker.  Mike / Bill moved the adoption of this slate and that was approved.

Kit distributed copies of the Yearbook / DVD that Al Schonborn had assembled.  Other discs will be sent by mail to the rest of the 120 members Kit has on our 2007 members' roster.

Al provided a written report on the UK situation, from the new Hartley Wayfarers  disqualification, through to the UKWA's proposed resolution of the problem.   Roger Proctor has made a great contribution toward brokering the deal.  Al moved  that we put the CWA on record as supporting this resolution.  Mike seconded and all agreed.

Under new business, the meeting heard invitations to specific events on our 2008 calendar from representatives of the Conestoga, Lac Deschênes, and Mississauga sailing clubs.

We adjourned to the bar / dining room / awards ceremony upon a motion by Al at 1915.

About 40 of us then enjoyed a wonderful sit-down meal prepared by student chefs of TS&CC member Morris Strods, chief chef at Toronto's King Edward Hotel. Meanwhile the projector cycled through Al’s extensive collections of scenes from our 2007 events in both automated and narrated fashion.

AWARDS

After an excellent dinner and slide show, Mike Codd acted as Master of Ceremonies.  The first order of business was to award Gold certificates to Julia Schonborn and Tom Wharton for their participation in 100 Wayfarer events, and Silver to Mark Taylor for 50.

The Bacardi Trophy for the top Canadian at the '07 Worlds (in Denmark) went to Kit Wallace and David Weatherston.

Dave and Carol Hansman, currently on business in the Antipodes, were congratulated on winning the Don Davis Memorial Trophy for years of outstanding service to our Class. Al read a grateful acceptance "speech" emailed by Dave from Perth, Australia.

Andrew Haill was singled out for his display of Class Spirit, and was given the Red Herring Award. Andrew also repeated as the winner of the Ted Davis Memorial Trophy (best cruise log of the year) for his outstanding tale: The Quest for Donald Duck - a Lake of the Woods Wayfarer Cruise.

Andy Douma was congratulated for being our Rookie of the Year, and apologized to for the absence of his Raudaschl Trophy.

The Queen City YC Tray for Most Improved Sailor was awarded (in absentia) to Sue Pilling.

The top aggregate score for the four major North American Wayfarer regattas was run up by Al Schonborn and Marc Bennett, earning them the Storer Trophy (again).

The The Ted Davis Memorial Trophy also had a repeat winner, Andrew Haill whose Lake of the Woods Cruise log was recommended to all by Al who has it available on line.

Ted Lacelle was not present to hear his citation for the Lansdown-O'Brien Spittoon, dealing with his less than auspicious heavy weather helming of Dave Platt's keelboat.

Door prize bottles of wine were won by Mark Taylor, Kirk Iredale, and Hans Gottschling.

Al:

It is late Saturday evening here in Perth, Western Australia.  Being some 14 hours ahead of you gives me a full day well in front of the folks back home, but it also allows me to think about the AGM which, by this time in your day, will be over.

I had the chance to do sailing today (Saturday 19 January), and that chance came in the form of a 3.5 hour race run out of the Royal Perth Yacht Club – host and home of the America's Cup defense by Australia II.  I was adopted by a skipper who needed a trimmer – and darned if we didn’t win our division!  The sailors here are like the rest we encounter – serious on the race course,  beer loving and fun afterwards.

That got me to thinking about the CWA and sailing in general.  It cuts across international borders.  There are fantastic people involved everywhere.  For the most part, people are there to have fun.  What else can a person ask for!

Although, for obvious reasons, Carol and I cannot attend the AGM, please be aware that we are grateful to be  thought of in a manner worthy of people receiving the Don Davis Memorial Trophy.  We simply want to have fun and it is our hope that we have been able to help other people have the same opportunity for comradeship and pure enjoyment that we have had in Wayfaring.  When I look at the criteria that says “outstanding service to the Canadian Wayfarers over the course of many years”, I am somewhat embarrassed.  Although we have owned a Wayfarer for over 18 years it has only been relatively recently that we have really stuck our hand in it.  There are so many deserving people that surely must come before us.  Please accept our thanks to all of them for making it possible for us to even be involved with such a great bunch of people.

Best regards to all,

Dave and Carol Hansman

Ps: I would appreciate it if you could read this to everyone at the meeting.
