the Tim Dowling Memorial Regatta
Clark Lake YC * Sept. 23-24, 2006

Sunday: Race 5
by Peggy Quiniff and Neil Robb

The same course as for race 4. A nasty-looking rain squall came and went between races, leaving partly sunny skies and continuing exciting winds, not to mention better lighting for our photographers! Once more, the Interlake spinnakers ...

Quick! Who will have to keep clear when the Interlake with the green, black and yellow spi overtakes the Sunfish? No, it's not overtaking boat keep clear, and it's not because the Sunfish is smaller. The Interlake is on starboard and the Sunfish is on port, so the latter must get out of the way.
...

A better view of Jim and Tim Boucher.
...

Tom Katterheinrich has his Sunfish cookin'. Meanwhile Tom Marriott and Mike Judd (909)  try to hold off Mr. Bradley who appears to have added a third crew member for this windier day, perhaps thinking back to yesterday's mini-swim?
...

(l to r) Bob Bradley, Richard Blake with Tim Lahner, Jack Coleman with Ann Taylor
...

Dan (far right) has again built up a nice Rebel lead on the upwind leg but Dave (l) is once more catching up on the downwind leg. Fewer planing opportunities this time though, so that Dan actually hits the final beat back to #6 near the club with a modest lead. A bad tactical call by Uncle Al let Dave through, however, and once more, that was all she wrote.
...

Bruce Nowak (l) and Scott Dowling battle it out for 3rd place among the Rebels.
...

The light-weight team of Jim and Theresa should ...
...

... find this long run to their advantage.
...

Larry and Todd Schmida get a lovely ride in their Buc.
...

A four-boat battle is reduced by one as ...
...

... Richard and Tim fall victim to the treacherous shifts near the south shore. Meanwhile, Jack Coleman (l) is about to tack in ...
...

... pursuit of Kevin Bracy (1248).
...

Both boats look very nicely ...
...

... trimmed!!
...

Kevin (1248) pinches out above Jack but will not catch Jeff Clark (1370) who crossed on port tack and then wisely tacked to cover and protect his 5th-place finish in this the final race.
...

Dave Nickels, US National Rebel champion for the past two years demonstrates the fine art of covering. Note how he has positioned his boat directly between the photographer on the RC boat (i.e. the finish line) and his nearest competitor, Dan Hockenberry whose boat is barely visible to leeward of Dave's.
...

No point in overlaying the finish line, so Dan and Al get all set for ...
...

... a nice, crisp tack. Just as the "book" recommends, Dave follows suit.
...

A nice tack for Dan and Al (4180) but Dave and Emilia easily ...
...

... match it and hold on to sweep the Rebel series.
...

Often the one who gets the last - or at least the loudest - word, Bruce Nowak here gets the last sailing pic of a very enjoyable 2006 Clark Lake Fall Regatta, which I hope Tim Dowling was watching from up above. I know he would have loved the interesting, exciting sailing and the marvellous fellowship!
