A couple of Wayfarers and the Rebel leaders pass the RC raft as they near the end of their final downwind leg. Note Dan Hockenberry (2nd from right) who is getting a great breeze along the far shore and will move from mid-fleet into first by the time he and Scott reach #5!! (l to r) Bob Frick (W3975), Uncle Al (R3923), Harold Whitcomb (W2304), Neil Robb (R4162), Dan Hockenberry (R4180), Woody Woodruff (R4077)    - for full-size pic, click here

... Uncle Al (l) defends his lead by staying between the main body of the fleet and the next mark, always being careful to avoid their wind shadows, while at the same time going up in the lulls and down with the puffs. Ultimately, Dan (4th from right, largely hidden by the 4195 mainsail) will reach up at the last moment, increase his apparent wind accordingly, cut across all those bows, and round in first place, perhaps two lengths ahead of Al who is happy to have lost only one boat as the fleet kept bringing the wind from astern.
