After a bright and early 9 a.m. start using boats on shore, Marc puts the finishing touches on ...

... our rigging and sails talk by demonstrating on the boat that we will be sailing, and ...

... taking questions (while Al rests up with a sip of coffee, a smoke and the camera). Marc and Al then followed up by demonstrating a few roll tacks just off these docks (no pics available - yet) before we all took a well deserved break at the Hilton for some lunch.

Marc Bennett (r) is a man of numerous talents: not only is he an outstanding crew who is always fun to sail with, but also a superb helmsman. His knowledge of rigging and sail shape makes him much sought after by many keelboat sailors in the Toronto area. And in his spare time, Marc is frequently prevailed upon to help out as an expert mark setter in important regattas. It is this knowledge that he is sharing above with members of the 2006 PMG CanAm Regatta race committee.

The Kupers family has just arrived from Brampton, Ontario: (l to r) Laura, Amanda, John and his wife

And they have already completed the registration formalities as can be seen by the spiffy cap and shirt the young ladies are displaying, items that each entrant received upon checking in with Linda MacDonald and Marie Gjos on duty at the registration desk inside the Tilt'n Hilton.

Laura (l) and Amanda one more lovely time

After lunch, Uncle Al talked a bit of upwind tactics and strategy inside the main barroom of the Hilton, which in turn was followed by a slide show of 2005 CanAm pictures that Al had put onto a CD for both entertainment and educational purposes. As I expected, that show was the most fun of the whole day's coaching programme. Many thanks to Bob Tisdall for getting us the use of a computer projector and screen, and for setting up and running the whole thing to perfection. By the time Mason sent Becky to gong me so that the official (and delicious!) CanAm Reception could proceed as scheduled, we had seen most of the slides.
It was a fulfilling day for Marc and me, one that bore fruit for the fleet in visibly improved trim and tuning in the subsequent racing as you will be able to see for yourself with a glance at Jake Cormier's many great action shots from the racing. Oddly enough, the day's discussions had left Marc and me far more worn out than a full day of heavy air racing, and we retired to our tent for the night at the unheard of hour of 8:30 p.m.
