...
three boats - l to r: John Kupers, Kipp and
Mac - are bow to bow in the fight for 4th. Becky (far
right), who had been sitting a clear series 2nd
after scoring 3-2 in the first pair of races, needs a
major comeback here if she is to maintain that
runner-up spot. for

comfortably. Steve Macklin, not captured in pixels here,
was retaining his clear 3rd. ... |
It's still close for
4th as the boats come in to the windward mark on the
starboard layline. ... |
Mike > John >
Kipp ... |
Fast forward to
the leeward mark where Marc and Al make a nice, close
but smooth rounding onto the final beat. To be able to
leave the main fully out until the last possible
moment but then get it in fast for the beat, Al and
Marc switch sheets, so that Marc can pull the main in
rapidly hand over hand. Meanwhile, Al just pulls the
jib sheet in by feel since he has to make sure he
watches where he's going. Hitting the mark would,
after all, be slow. Anyway, the whole process takes
only a couple of seconds!
... |
Tactics 101
would call for Al to position himself between
2nd-place Andrew and the finish line but that would
have made the race truly boring since it would have
reduced Andrew's chances of passing us to virtually
nil. Instead, Marc and I decided to take the long port
tack inshore to see if there really was the wind bend
we thought/hoped might let us sail to the finish line
on a nice starboard lift.
... |
Steve and Andrew (523)
appear to have a lock on 3rd as they get set to round
onto the final beat. 4th is harder to call though.
Judging by apparent mast height, John and Laura (2136)
and Mike with Kirk (628) seem to be dead even. for full size pic, click here - use Back button to return to this page ... |
Fast forward once more
to the finish where we find Al again thanking the
committee for their fine work while Marc eyes the beer
in the front compartment. (Yup - we did get that lift,
albeit a slight one.) ... |
Feeling sorry for the
RC who will have to be out here a while longer, Al
promises to have a beer on their behalf when he gets in. ... |

Lots of action
at the finish line here as Tony and Stu Cond (1301)
grab 12th. But who will be 13th? Colin (929) is well
placed but is on port and will be subject to penalty
for right-of-way infractions until he has cleared the
finish line. So it won't be enough for Colin to get
the beep, he'll have to clear Eric Kirby (on starboard
in 2469), too! Or will Charles McLaughlin (2nd
from left) beat them both?
... |
It was indeed, Charles
(1186) who took 13th by a whisker, while Eric (2469)
tacked and barely beat Colin (929). |
