After
Steve,
Jim and Al rounded onto the final beat within about 5
seconds of each other, Steve made a couple of poor
choices, and the Hilton
Beach Cup devolved into a
duel between Jim and Al. As they fought each other,
both teams sailed
very well and consistently pulled away from the
others. The photo above
was likely taken about two minutes before the finish.
As I recall, we
had tacked to slightly underlay the favoured pin
(left) end of the
finish line as diagrammed below:

At
position 1, Jim tacked to port and managed to cross Al
by about three
feet. At position 2, Jim tacked on the layline to the
mark end of the
line, pinning Al in textbook fashion. Alas, Jim fell
in the boat. At
that point Al looked up (position 3) just in time to
see Jim out of
control, bearing
away across Al's transom and out of first place.
