HOT IX Charity Regatta, Lake Townsend Yacht Club
Report submitted by Trish McDermott

The HOT IX Regatta participants enjoyed a wonderful weekend at Lake Townsend on October 29-30. What an awesome regatta it was, and we raised a lot of money for a very worthy local cause, earlier.org. Their mission is to find a test for earlier detection of breast cancer, thereby saving lives and preventing unnecessary surgery and treatments. If you would like to contribute to this very important cause, please go to earlier.org and make a donation to the HOT IX Regatta.

Before we go any farther, many thanks to Uwe Heine and Nancy Collins for their wonderful artwork for the T-shirts and the hats! Al's note: Not to forget Trish McDermott who did everything from being Regatta Chair to this report. Great job, Trish, and thanks a million.

The weekend weather was not perfect, but not bad. It was a bit chilly, with clouds and gusty winds on Saturday and more clouds and less wind on Sunday. Overall, five races were completed and our wonderful PRO's Alan and Pat Backus set up challenging courses both days.

The Wayfarer fleet far outnumbered any other with 13 boats. First place was won by Jim Cook and Ken Butler. In second place were AnnMarie Covington and John MacAdam. Third went to Uwe Heine and Nancy Collins. What a great showing by the Wayfarer fleet, even with some of their members serving on Race Committee!

There were two long distance attendees, one from Canada, the indomitable Uncle Al Schonborn, and two from Maryland, John and Mary Driver.

The Flying Scot fleet had seven boats, with first place going to Robert Bouknight and David de Miranda. Second was Tom Bews and Richard and Karen Jordan. Third was taken by Daniel Adams and Craig Stay. There are a couple of interesting stories here: the second and third place winners were both on LTYC club sailboats. Now they're not bad boats, but the skippers made all the difference.

The High School Sailing Team (HSST) made an impressive showing on Sunday with Logan Hayes and Emma Autry taking first and Elizabeth Davis and Preston Miller taking second. We so much appreciate the HSST joining us and their passion for the sport, as well as all the hard work their coaches Mark Hayes and George Bageant have done to develop and sustain the HSST. The next is HOT X and this is a big one. Please mark and clear your calendars for next year, October 28 and 29, 2023. Don't let anything else get in the way. We guarantee you'll have a blast!
