Rick and Aaron Goldt plus Sunday mystery crew capture the last ever(?) June Bug The 2004 June Bug Regatta at London's Fanshawe YC may well have been the last of 35 June Bugs held annually since 1970. Fanshawe's Rick Goldt, his son Aaron, and a female mystery crew on the Sunday left no doubt as to the winner in 2004, as they counted 5 firsts in a 6-race series while totally living up to their top-seeded billing. A four-way battle over the runner-up spot went down to the final race before Brian Jeffs and Scott Bamford edged out fellow Londoners, Jens, Sharon and Kevin Biskaborn by a single point. George Blanchard and Mike Codd of TSCC had been holding series second going into the last race but exited with an 8th, which dropped them a point behind the Biskaborns. Both Blanchard and Biskaborn beat their seeds by three places and thus captured Wayfarer Most Improved honours. Congratulations, George, Mike, Jens, Sharon and Kevin! A fine 3rd in the finale solidified series 5th for Dutton's Roger Shepherd and Joanne Kumpf who had been battling for that position with Steve Carroll and John Atwell of Toronto, and Kitchener's Dwight Aplevich and Al Nichols. Steve Carroll grew up sailing on Fanshawe Lake and had dominated the Laser fleet in recent June Bugs and Pumpkins, but found the going tougher as he switched back to Wayfarers prior to the 2004 Worlds. Dwight and Al, another team gearing up for the Worlds, beat Steve and John in the finale but fell just short of catching them in the series. Three Fanshawe teams ended up tied in series 8th with the tie being broken in favour of newcomer, Jeff Eames and his wife, Vera, on the strength of their 5th-race 4th, while Len Macdougall and Andy Turnbull's 5th in the finale was enough to give them the tie-breaking edge over Bob Kennedy and a mystery crew - his future son-in-law, who managed nothing better than a 6th while racing Saturday only.
