The Mississauga SC Wayfarer/CL Regatta
Race 2.1
by Gord Leachman &
Alan Hallwood

Seconds to go before the race 2 start - same course as race 1. The line is pretty square. Most of us being at the boat end has left Colin (r) the pin end of the line all to himself where he is about to make a nice port-tack start.

The gun goes and Colin  has lots of room. Right beside the RC boat, Geoff is very well positioned and Al (3854) has already begun to foot off to keep Geoff from taking his wind.
...

A blurry look a few seconds later shows Colin (l) moving and pointing well, while Al (dark hull) continues to tread a fine line between Geoff to windward and Mark to leeward. Rob (1050) and Stuart (r) have left themselves with an uphill battle after needlessly late starts.
...

As Colin (mostly hidden by 1050) converges with the starboard fleet, Mark (7673) has footed out nicely. Judging by relative mast heights, Al (3854) may be far enough to windward to avoid Mark's backwind.

Or not. At least Al will likely have freedom to tack and clear Geoff. Colin will go behind Mark and will have to ...
...

... bear off to keep clear of Al (3854) as well. Stuart (7660) has been moving nicely in relatively clear air.
...

Gary (2679) has picked a bad spot in which to tack for clear air, ending up in Colin's (929) lee.
...

Near the windward mark: Al, with his light crew, has been able to slowly work his way past Mark. Here, Al feels justified in sitting on Mark's wind since every foot of distance he can put between himself and Mark will help when the boats round onto the run in a minute or so.
...

Colin watches the mark closely as Al once more shoots it to avoid two more tacks.
...

Again, the winds look patchy as Al hoists to start the long run.
This will be a fine situation in which to once more go "up in the lulls and down with the puffs".
...

Team Taylor sets off in pursuit.
...

Al stays low for two reasons: 1. fighting each other up to windward needlessly lengthens the distance we need to sail, and 2. if all else is equal, we want the left side which will leave us inside at the mark and on starboard for any convergences with boats coming in from the right.
...

Geoff and George (9483) have rounded a nice 3rd ahead of ...
...

... Kit who is fighting to overcome a poor start. Gary (l)  and Rob, meanwhile, continue their contest against ...
...

... Colin (929) who needs to keep clear of the three spinnaker boats, all of whom are on starboard.
...

Despite his fine start, Colin (929) has dropped behind the other two CL's after risking a trip to the left corner. Gary (2679), meanwhile, rounds with a nice little edge that should give crew, John, lots of time to do an unrushed hoist.
...

Rob just nicely lays the mark while Colin crosses Rodrick (3568) and will ...
...

... also lay the mark. While Rob helps the wind to push his main out, Sam gets set to wing the jib.
...

Colin and Heather soon have their spinnaker up, and will ...
...

... now gybe to try for better breeze on the left side.
