The Mississauga SC Wayfarer/CL Regatta
September 16-17, 2006
report by Uncle Al
Light airs were the order of the Sept. 16-17 weekend as a 9-boat fleet (6 Wayfarers and three CL's) enjoyed a pleasant series of seven races, well run by John Hemingway and his committee. With Tom Wharton unavailable to help defend his and Uncle Al's title due to work pressures, TSCC Junior sailor, Colin Schwarz, saved the "day" for Al. The very keen and well-mannered 12-year-old did excellent crew work throughout the series as he and Uncle Al held off a determined come-back by the hot home team of Mark Taylor and his brother, Paul.

We may well be seeing a future star of our Wayfarer Class in young Colin who is eager to sail, and in less than two years of sailing, has begun to soak up vast amounts of knowledge. He reminds me of how keen I was as a Junior and I do hope he goes on to have as much fun as I have been having as a sailor!!

Both Geoff Edwards and Kit Wallace showed excellent speed and strategy at times. But in the end, they could not match the consistency shown by Al and Mark, and usually placed 3-4 in the races. Ultimately, it was the team of Kit Wallace and David Weatherston who captured series 3rd ahead of Geoff with Saturday crew, George Waller, and Sunday crew, Lou Scaglione.

Top dogs in a very closely contested CL series were Gary McIlroy and John Wilkinson of the host club who placed 5th overall and beat out clubmates, Rodrick Anderson and Rod McIver and their W3568 by a couple of points.

Only a point further back we had a tie between two CL's, Rob Wierdsma with daughter, Sam (13) of MSC, and Coburg's Colin Junkin and Heather Wood who lost the tie breaker.

Making his regatta debut was John Wilkinson who had bought W7660 from Fanshawe's Rick Goldt. John and crew, Ben Wierdsma, started off with a pair of lasts but had a promising improving trend in their results: 9-9-8-6-6-5. Well done, guys.

Thanks to the Mississauga Sailing Club, and especially to Scott Hansen and his many volunteers, for a fine weekend that was enjoyed by all of us. John Hayward provided the committee boat and was its skipper for the weekend. Allan Hallwood and Stuart Rauch served on the committee boat. Michael Clayton completed the committee boat crew and he was in charge of scoring. In total, about 27 people contributed time to man boats, prepare lunches, man the registration table as well as set-up and clean-up for this event.
