Close behind Mark ...
...

... Tom (l) and Al hold the chute to the last second - note the increasing wave action.
...

Marc and Julie have moved up into 3rd.
...

Mark and Paul ...
...

... meanwhile, have rounded flawlessly and started the second beat a nice two to three lengths ahead of ...
...

... Al and Tom, who ...
...

... then caught a major break when Mark tacked to go left rather than forcing Al to do so first. Instead, Al was pushed to go to the right which turned out to be favoured this time. By the time, Mark came back, Al was gone and went on to beat Mark.
...

Colin and Heather douse near the leeward mark - a leeward douse is a needlessly difficult and sometimes dangerous manoeuvre: much easier to take the pole off, stand in front of the windward jib sheet, and drag the chute down on the windward side!
...

Rodrick rounds just off ...
...

... Geoff's bow.
...

More increased wave action as Geoff and Ron may be about to get wet?
...

A nice crisp tack by ...
...

... Marc and Julie leaves SHADES aimed right at the camera.
...

Julie hikes hard in a puff as Marc rushes to ease the main a bit.
...

A bit of excess heel here which leads to weather helm that we can see ...
...

... Marc fighting with his tiller here.
...

As Gary (l) and Alan (8745) near the end of their run, we can see that Mark (7673) has indeed tacked away from Al.
...

Geoff heads left, a strategy that has paid off on all of today's beats thus far.
Going right will pay this time, however, and Colin (929) will end up 4th ahead of Geoff.
...

Al and Tom continue to sail into a knock and will soon tack and cross Mark.
...

Colin and Heather's main leech looks lovely, artistically speaking.
But too much twist leads to lousy pointing - more of this at the start of race 3.
...

Looks like Alan and Jillian will round just ahead of ...
...

... Gary.
