Today we had the annual Mayors cup at Lake Townsend which had six Wayfarers on the line.  Of note is the third place finisher, Jeanne Allamby, using the club boat owned by the USWA with the Doyle cruising sails.  She did fantastic in the light airs of Sat with two second places and a number of mark roundings in first place.  Might be a Wayfarer in her future.  Club boat is getting great publicity there so thanks to all of you for letting this boat reside in NC for the time being.

Note to Al: Jeanne has agreed to write up the regatta within the next few days and Linda will send a couple of pictures. Of course Kathy Holland took a zillion pics which will be on Snapfish at some point. Jim Heffernan

Hi Al,
Here is a short report on the Mayor's Cup at LTYC for inclusion in your Whiffle.  Four photos were sent separately.  Folks missed you!  Take care, Linda

Thirty boats participated in the 37th Annual Mayor’s Cup at Lake Townsend in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 7-8, 2014  The Wayfarer class was well represented with six entries, enough to command a separate start.  Saturday’s easterly winds were light and feckless and demanded extreme patience from the sailing crews for the two races completed.  Sunday blessed the sailors with ample winds from the southeast, around 10 mph and gusts over 15 mph and two races were sailed.  Both days offered lovely Carolina sunshine and temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s.

Jim and Linda Heffernan put in a strong performance in their woodie, Dawn Treader, with four firsts closely pursued by their composite Wayfarer boat, Morning Star,  raced by Megan Hughes, a collegiate superstar new to the area and Mike Sigmund, who usually skippers a Buccaneer.  Megan and Mike took second place in the regatta.

The biggest surprise of the weekend was the performance of skipper Jeanne Allamby and crew Phil Leonard who raced the Wayfarer club boat and finished third.  Jeanne arrived at the windward mark leading the pack in the first two windward legs of the regatta’s opening race and continued to impress us with her light air dominance.

The entire fleet of Wayfarers provided keen class competition and took turns passing each other.  AnnMarie Covington and Susan Cole, both LTYC members, finished fourth.  Two other sailors who had just completed the Chesapeake Cruise with AnnMarie, switched over to racing mode and brought up the last two positions in the Wayfarer class.  LTYC member Ken Butler with Carol, a crew from the Carolina Sailing Club sailed in Ken’s newly restored wood boat, W449, while Jesse Tate, from South Carolina sailed his new Mark IV with his kayaking friend, Blake Christoffersen.
