The Wayfarer Midwinters of 2005

When we arrived back at the Lake Eustis SC early Thursday afternoon, several W's were already
parked there, including Morris Metcalf's Murphy's Law and Joe De Brincat's Maltese Falcon (r).

...

Geoff Edwards (l) and Pat Reardon were preparing Jansubar.
...

Not surprisingly, Marc (l) found our host, Mike Murto, near the draft beer in the clubhouse. Here he tells
Marc a story that needs gestures, as his wife, Dotty, our Regatta Chairman, hears it again and enjoys it.

...

Tony Krauss had arrived from Virginia.
...

Joe De Brincat and his son, Brian, were washing down the beautifully re-furbished W1115 before ...

... they rigged up Joe's radio-controlled yacht as Andrew Parks looked on.
...

It's a bit of a drifter in here, though.

The crowd begins to gather: (l to r) Mary Abel, Marc Bennett, Michele Parish, Peter Rahn, Frank Goulay,

The by now traditional Thursday night outing to Dead River Vic's duly took place: Dotty and Holly (l) above.

Friday morning arrived cold, damp and windy, and we reflected on how much nicer it was to sit here
than in the tent accommodations of the early years of the Midwinters at the LESC.

LESC Commodore, Mike Murto began the Competitors' Briefing at 10 a.m. by introducing our excellent PRO,
David Williams, who promptly postponed any possible racing 'til
1 p.m. in hopes the weather might improve by then.

No complaints from any of the competitors. After all, we still had Saturday and Sunday if today's racing got washed out.
...

A pleasant place to wait out the postponement over ...
...

... frequent cups of coffee.

Is this how you do your duck hunting, Nick???

Friday afternoon: It's still cold and the day's racing has been abandoned but the winds have let up enough to have allowed a few of us to go for a bit of a practice sail. Lucky that Peter and Frank went out, as they discovered that W1395, their borrowed boat, was developing serious structural failures, and they have now settled on borrowed boat #2, courtesy of Jim Lingeman. Here, the "experts" look it over and give advice. Despite generous amounts of help and loaned gear, poor Frank and Peter were still at it well after the boat park was pitch dark, working by the lights of their rental car. But they got it done in time for Saturday's race 1 of the series!!
