The Wayfarer Midwinters of 2005
Saturday: race 2 pics - 1
photos mostly by Richard Kinnie with a few by Uncle Al

Those Flying Scots look pretty large off our bow as ...
...

... Marc (above) and I head out for the 12 noon race.
...

The day is warming up even more and the winds have gone fairly light for the moment.
...

The view from SHADES as we head out to race 2.
...

Joe and Brian relax under spinnaker.
...

As race time nears, John (l) and Eddie cruise along in winds that have freshened.
...

The Scots will be starting before us, and their countdown has begun.
...

And they're off!
...

From SHADES ...
...

... the Flying Scot ...
...

... start ...
...

... looked like this.
...

A reminder that we would not wish to ...
...

... collide with any of these boats!!
...

The Wayfarer start finds ...
...

... Richard and Michele (10139) off to a fine, and more patient, start in a nice little starboard lift.
...

The wind oscillates back to the direction it was coming from during the countdown. Al (3854) has again found a
starting spot that has let him tack when the knock came, and the always alert Gale (4106)  also tacks on this header.
...

Lots of different close-hauled headings throughout the fleet which seem to indicate small, localized wind variants.
...

Morris and Andrew find a starboard lift, but ...
...

... Gale and Al have even better stuff: a good port tack lift and better breeze!! Thus, they are ...
...

...... already moving out on most of the fleet who have the extra handicap of disturbed wind and water from each other. Nick (864) is chugging along in clear air and a lift, so that he will be seriously tempted to hang on here, rather than to go after ...

... Al (3854), Gale (4106) and Ted (2415) who clearly have more pressure.
...

As we near the windward mark, the Flying Scots become yet another strategic consideration to mull over
as we play shifts and puffs like the one off Richard's (yellow hull with the clucking noises!) bow.
...

Ed Kraft (yellow deck) and Robert Hart have chosen (or perhaps been pushed into?) the tougher approach to the windward mark: right through the heart of the Scot fleet - lots of disturbed air and water, not to mention starboard tackers.
...

As the Scots reach the leeward gate, the Wayfarers have begun their run, with ...
...

... Al (red spi) holding a narrow lead over Peter (about to disappear behind the Scot).
...

(l to r) Peter, Eddie, Robert and Richard. Note how Eddie and Robert are sailing high to avoid sailing through
the mid-leg start/finish line. Both Peter and Richard are also sailing high as they await a puff to run down with.
...

The view from SHADES: Richard and Michele looking good, as are ...
...

... Nick and Joe (864) and Mike and Patricia (r) with their museum piece,
an old early 80's Richard Storer "cheese wedge" spinnaker.
...

Geoff and Pat have gone far left off the rhumbline in search of breeze and found it.
But will it make up for all that extra distance they are having to sail??
...

Their leaks now, fixed, Peter and Frank gurgle happily along in second place.
