The Wayfarer
Midwinters of 2005 |
|
Saturday's ideal racing
weather continues as the Scots are into ... |
|
... the
final minute of the countdown to their second race. |
|
An excellent line set by our
RC, as evidenced by the nice even spread of boats up
and down the line. |
|
Nearing the final minute of
the countdown to Wayfarer race 3. |
|
The last few seconds before
the "gun". |
|
And they're off! |
|
Uncle Al (3854) has the
leeward end start he wanted - ahead of Peter (93)
and ... |
|
... Nick (864), but an early
starboard lift moves ... |
|
... Jim Lingeman (2136) and
Joe De Brincat (1115) ahead of ... |
|
... Al (3854) and Nick (864)
who are on the outside of the lift. At the far left, |
|
A few
minutes later, Nick has tacked and crosses Mo (Murphy's
Law) who still needs to crank his main
in to maximize his pointing, something he can afford
to do since he's got lots of wind but is definitely
not overpowered - since he and Andrew aren't even
sitting on the side deck yet!
... |
|
Nearing the end of the first
beat, Jim (2136) crosses Joe (1115), despite a main
that is not in for maximum pointing! |
|
Bob Hart (green hull) and Bob
Frick (black hull) duel it out near the windward
mark. |
|
Peter (93), Mo (10245) and
Robert (10195) thread their way through the Flying
Scot spinnakers near the mark. |
|
A panoramic view |
|
The first run of race 3 was
the only leg on which the winds went "squirrelly" -
dying completely for a short while and then ... |
|
...
coming up from either side. Peter and Frank (3rd
from right) took a substantial lead in the Wayfarers
after rounding the windward mark first and then -
correctly, as it turned out - choosing the right
side of the course down the run, where they passed a
number of the larger, potentially faster Scots. ... |
|
Up near the windward mark,
the lads ... |
|
... were now getting the
rejuvenated wind, but ... |
|
... further down, it remained
patchy and shifty. Here the boats are reaching on
port, |
