the 2011 Wayfarer Midwinters
Friday: race 2 pics - 3
by Jim Orth

...

About to round 4th are the Minsons.
...

It's very close between Jim L and Ted as they approach the windward mark. Uncle Al and Tony (2nd from r) meanwhile, are pulling away while Richard S and Jim H (2nd and 3rd from l) have apparently (and justifiably) given up on Uncle Al and are now fighting over 2nd place.  - click here for larger image
...

I guess you could say Butch (blue hull) is a leg ahead of Ted (991) and not be actually lying!!
...

Neither Ted nor Jim L  (3991) will have a spinnaker with which to chase Butch.
...

Still hanging in there is Mike Murto (2959).
...

Next to the mark is Jim McIntyre who has ...
...

... Richard W breathing down his neck.
...

Eeeek! It always pays to keep your head out of the boat and an eye on the big picture:
Butch is sailing in excellent form but look where he is heading in relation to the next mark (far right).
...

The spi-less Jimmy Mac and Richard W (10423) set off in pursuit of Mike Murto.
...

Izak (3492) and Jim B close in on ...
...

... the windward mark.
...

Jim needs to let his crew concentrate on/do the spi work. It works very well for the helm to stand and steer with his knees while hoisting the chute. Sometimes, slower is faster (slow down and win, said Stuart Walker!!) With Izak so close astern, I would have not bothered with the spinnaker until we were past the offset mark where I would have gybed in order to
(a) defend the left (buoy room, starboard when we meet guys coming from the right side of the run)
(b) set up a windward hoist (easier on the sail cloth, hourglasses are more easily seen/fixed than behind the main, spi is easy for helm to fly (once spi halyard is cleated) while crew adds the pole to the mix
...

Instead, Izak is off on the straight line course to the leeward mark (well done, Izak!!) while 911 wastes more distance
sailing across the course than even the greatest spi hoist ever, can hope to recoup in a non-high-performance boat like a Wayfarer.
...

Pat gets set to round.
...

After all that, the Bests (l) have now sailed into a dead spot. This is indeed the last we see of 911 on this day
as the retired due, I believe, to ridiculous amounts of water leaking into the boat.
