Hi Al,

I have attached the two sail wave files for the Full Moe Fraser and the Half Moe Fraser long distance race.

Marg also wrote a short report. I hope this helps you out.

HOT, HOT TEMPERATURES AND VERY LIGHT WINDS MARK THE 2017 MOE FRASER LONG DISTANCE RACE

The Full Moe Fraser Race is twelve nautical miles in total, two nautical miles between the six marks…further than your eye can see.  Only compasses are allowed, no GPS.  The Half Moe is exactly that:  six nautical miles.

The 29th Moe was a sharp contrast to the last two Moes which brought high winds and waves.   Light and oscillating winds had the competitors searching (and often in frustration) for any wind patterns on the water.   The race started with a light southerly wind, slightly shifting to the south west.  Even though frequent tacking  is generally not a good idea in light winds, it seemed to pay off for the lead boats to follow some of those shifts.  To complicate the race further, the J24s were holding their Worlds right beside our course and some of our competitors had the interesting and vocal experience of tangling with the J24s.

The lead boats had substantial leads rounding the windward mark and those positions held for the rest of the race.  The final spinnaker run was a gruelling one hour exercise of flying the kite in a surprising,  but unfortunately even lighter,  south easterly.    It was a great relief to finally round the last mark and head for the finish line in the harbour of MSC.

Seventeen boats were on the start line for the full Moe and only seven boats finished.  Four boats competed in the half Moe and only one boat, Brian and Liz McCormack in their CL16 finished.  Well done Brian and Liz!

Many thanks to Bruce Buckingham and his on-water crew and the on-land club members who served up a wonderful dinner.

Dare we hope for perfect winds and weather for 2018 Moe Fraser Long Distance Race?
