the 2003 Wayfarer North Americans
Sunday post-race & Awards
Photos (mostly) by Uncle Al
...

On Sunday, after the racing, Chris Pedersen (l) got a visit from his sister, Annemarie, and her friend. Note Annemarie's shirt: Do you believe in love at first sight ...
..

... or should I ...
..

The awards presentation turns into a tailgate party ...
..

... as Mike Codd starts the proceedings with presentation of Canadian Nationals medals which have belatedly arrived from the CYA. (l to r) George Blanchard, Mike Codd, Chris Pedersen, Alan and Paul Laderoute, ???, Annemarie Pedersen, our photographer Joanne Kumpf, Nick Seraphinoff.
..

Nick Seraphinoff (r) reminds everyone about the U.S. Nationals which will welcome one and all on Sept. 6-7 to some of North America's finest sailing waters and Nick's home club at Tawas Bay, Michigan.
..

Some of the lads are obviously giving the possibility serious thought.
(l to r)
Kit Wallace, Heider Funck, Ted Lacelle, Thomas Vendely

Marc Bennett (l) explains something to his beer-swilling buddies:
Hans Gottschling (mostly hidden), Tom Wharton and Frank Goulay.

..

The Regatta Chairman, John Weakley, has done a great job for us but is not finished yet. The white flags are for positions 4 through 10 at CWA-sponsored events. Sadly the location on the flags is wrong again, having been left unchanged from 2002.
..

In series 10th ...
..
... and the 2003 North Americans' Most Improved crew:
Françoise Brossard and Doug Netherton
(r)
...

Series 9th: the always amazing George Blanchard (less than 2 months from turning 90!!!) and Mike Codd (r)
..

In 8th place: Dwight Aplevich (r) with Al Nichols
..

In a 6th-place tie with the already departed Peter and Alex Rahn (not departed = dead, you fool! departed as in left for Montreal) were Ivan (r) and Chris Pedersen who made their 2003 Wayfarer debut a very good one!
..

In 5th place: Nick Seraphinoff (clutching his flag) and Marc Bennett (who appears to have stiffness in one of his joints (now, now! there is no cause to assume the wrong type of joint just because Marc is Jamaican!)
..

Series 4th: Hans Gottschling and his invisible crew, Zoltan Takacz
..

In 3rd place, doing a superb job in a borrowed W:
the brother team of Paul (r) and Alan Laderoute from Conestoga SC
..

And the 2003 Wayfarer North American Champions: Heider Funck (r) with Tom Wharton and Al Schonborn (c) with Frank Goulay (l) This marks the third time that Heider has ended in a tie for the North American title. In 1972, he tied with Dick Rothery of US Fleet 2, and in 1998 he tied with Uncle Al.
..

Special Wayfarer spirit awards, created and donated by Hans Gottschling went to (l to r) Joanne Kumpf, Françoise Brossard and Thomas Vendely.
