race 4 part 1 Photos by Joanne Kumpf |

Just a couple of seconds til
the start. Dwight Aplevich (4606) will be the only casualty here as he
was either over early or failed to go around the end of the line after
crossing it during the minute before the start (the I Flag having been
up!)
... |
And, they're off - with Hans
Gottschling (938) and Nick (864) acing the starts off a beautifully
square line. ... |
30 seconds later: Nick (864)
has tacked across to try the right side of the beat. Both Kit Wallace (r)
and Heider (6) appear to have a lovely lift - which bodes ill for Al
who got a great start but at the pin end and is now coming across in
front of 7218 (4th from left) to stay near Heider.
... |
The duel continues as Heider
crosses Al and then tacks (far left) to stay with Al (3854). ... |
The amazing pointing does it
again for Heider (l) ... ... |
... who rounds first (2nd
from left with pole up), closely pursued by Paul Laderoute (5th
from left) and Uncle Al right behind him. Poor Dwight Aplevich (4th
from left) paid the price for risking the port layline and had to
bear away for both Paul and Al ...
... |
... before rounding a close 4th
just in front of Nick (864). While Paul (7380) gybes to play the left side, Al (3854) chases Heider (6). ... |
The struggle continues as
Heider gybes and Al (red spi) does likewise to sit on Heider's wind. To
the right, Hans (938) and Kit (1037) are also in the mix, while to the
left, Nick should get some nice clear air once his gybe is completed.
... |
Four boats are close behind (l
to r: Fred Black, Kit Wallace, Doug Netherton and George
Blanchard) but Al (red spi) has eyes only for Heider (6). ... |
A beautiful-looking fleet. With
the leaders getting well off the rhumbline, especially Paul Laderoute (far
right), Al decides to go "deeper" onto almost ... ... |
... a dead run towards the RC
boat and the rhumbline. ... |
Paul and Alan have gone too far
out and may have lost Al as they cross astern of him and head to the
right-hand end of the gate. At this point the three leaders are all
within a boatlength of each other. What a race!!
.. |
And not far behind are Nick and
Marc (864) and George and Mike (CAN80), obviously enjoying the building
lake breeze. .. |
Also doing very well and
displaying fine spinnaker form are Fred Black with Ted Lacelle (7379)
and David Platt with Peter Seet. .. |
Nick and Marc (864) prepare to
gybe near the RC boat. Dwight and Al (4606) have lost ground thus far
on the run which they began in 4th place. Can things get any worse? |
