Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club * August 19-20 Saturday: Race 2.2 photos by Gord Nikaido & Boris Kuzmin |
A course change which will at
least give us one square beat and one square run is being signalled as
... ... |
... the leaders near the leeward
mark: (l to r) Al, Mark,
Tommy (hidden behind Mark), Heider, Alastair and Nick who has made a
nice recovery after being well behind the line at the gun but who was
one of the first to tack to port. for full-size pic, click here; then use Back button to return to this page ... |
With the wind back into the ENE,
Marc and Al have decided to head left after rounding, obeying the
George-Blanchard-shift imperative. With luck and a fiasco-free
rounding,
they should be able to get a nice clear-air gap in front of
Heider. And ... for full-size pic, click here; then use Back button to return to this page ... |
... they do (2nd from left). Of course, if
their nearest pursuers continue to go right, as Alastair (10137), Tommy
(60), Heider and Mark are doing so far, Marc and Al will tack and go
with them, while always protecting the left (and the George Blanchard
shift). In actual fact, the nearest challengers all tacked to head left
at their earliest opportunity, and we ultimately pulled away, not least
because we had been the first to tack. Although I do seem to recall
that, just to play it really safe, we tacked across fairly soon after
this, in order to defend from windward and ahead instead of from
leeward and way ahead! With Marc tweaking the sails, we pulled into a
substantial lead and moved into a series tie with Mark and Paul who

... placed a solid 2nd. ... |
Another 3rd for Heider and Tom (r) ... |
4th place for Alastair and
Annelies who moved into a series tie with ... ... |
... Tommy and Stefan. The latter
had again tacked downwind (note the port approach to the finish line)
and, in a very close three-boat finish, nipped ... ... |
... across the line just ahead
of ... ... |
... Kit (1037) and Nick. But
wait, this camera angle is deceptive: ... |
This view from the finish boat
shows that Nick just took 6th ahead of Kit. Wow! What a finish!! ... |
And close behind in 8th were ... ... |
... Mike Codd (r) and Kirk Iredale. ... |
Hans Gottschling and Bastian
Pfannkuche (red jacket) dropped a few places on the second lap, and
placed 9th. ... |
Completing the top ten were ... ... |
... Fred Black (l) and Michael Kachkovsky, who in
turn were closely followed by Geoff Edwards and George Waller. ... |
Graham Armstrong and his dad,
Gary ... ... |
... took 12th, ahead of ... ... |
... the Kozaks, Peter and Linda. ... |
Not as good a race this time
around for Ed Tait (r) and
Chris Walroth who ... ... |
... ended up 14th. ... |
Another 15th for Green Side Up, this time with ... ... |
... Lori Beehler at the helm and
Jason Hassard manning the spinnaker. ... |
In the increasing winds, Ted
Lacelle, didn't want to take any chances with young Colin aboard, and so enjoyed a nice, two-sail dawdle down the run. |
