Sunday: postponement > cancellation
photos by Rob Williams & Boris Kuzmin

Sunday morning brought a gray day with a cool, gusty NW winds blowing off shore. Nice, flat water for the quarter-mile nearest the shore. The thing that made you nervous, though, was that offshore breezes on Lake Ontario quickly blow the warm surface water across the lake and replace it with nearly instant hypothermia. Still, we were looking forward to the challenge. In the photo above, Nick and Julie (864) are doing a little upwind practice with Kit and David in one of the lulls.

This is Tommy and Stefan's kind of weather!!! Note how the waves are bigger further out.

Veterans, Marc (l) and Al, conserve the diminished energy in their aging bodies by heaving to with the board full up, while waiting for the racing to start. Meanwhile, all around them, at least five boats have already capsized in the fairly nasty gusts that were regularly whistling through. And unfortunately, only one safety boat was functional, so that the RC - wisely, in my view - sent us back in, and by noon, in increasing winds, had cancelled the remaining racing. It is to be hoped that next time we race at TSCC, more safety boats will be available.

Of course, not everyone applauded this decision, least of all Tommy and Stefan who were ...

Meanwhile, most of us were ashore ...

... awaiting the word from the Race Committee.

To me, it seemed like an OK spot to be: (l to r) Colin, George, Marc, Kirk, Al, Julie, Mike, Nick, David

From shore, the scene looked ...

... deceptively benign!

Heider (l) and Tom bring word of the cancellation.

Nick's W864: our rigging has certainly become far more complex than it was in the sixties!!
