2007 Wayfarer North Americans Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club * August 18-19 Saturday: race 1.2 pics by Rob Logan ... |
John and Thomas (3654) are about
to round the near mark 4th, while Al and Marc get set to gybe towards
the far mark. ... |
Meanwhile, race leaders, Mark
and Paul (7673) have Heider and Tom nicely tucked away to leeward and
astern. ... |
3rd-place Alastair and Andrew
have completed a nice rounding and and now have everything strapped in as they try to pinch out above the Taylor brothers. The jib looks to be in a bit tight and is backwinding the main here. ... |
Mike and Kirk (CAN90) are poised
to round 6th followed by (l to r) Fred
Black, Richard, Nick, Andrew and John de Boer. ... |
Kirk douses the Red Top spinnaker. Fred, with new
crew, Leo, has sailed the run without his spinnaker. ... |

Crews, Julie and Michele earn
their money here with quick, efficient spinnaker douses. ... |
With even the spinnaker-less
Andrew and Lori doing hull speed, John and Dolores' spinnaker has not
helped them much. ... |
Mike and Kirk round onto their
second beat while Al and Marc are now around the far gate mark and are headed left where they plan to "defend the left" against the four boats who rounded just ahead of them. ... |
At this point, Marc and Al
discussed the possibilities: The basic plan to defend the left would be
modified to the extent that we would tack on any earlier header that
might allow us to cross and cover the other four boats, most
particularly ... ... |
... Mark (7673) and Heider (600). ... |
Bad news for Heider and Mark:
the wind is losing some of its zip, as can be seen by the lack of
hiking here. These lighter winds are Al's bread and butter, and the
latter began to foot out as the three leaders continued to head left on
starboard. Ultimately, there came a big starboard header. At this
point, Al tacked, crossed and tacked back onto the headed tack to
obtain a strategic stranglehold between Mark and Heider and the
windward mark. All three eventually went left into the Humber River
shift, where Al waited for Mark and Heider to tack before sitting on
them all the way to the windward mark where he ...

... rounded with a lead that in
this fading breeze was made uncomfortable only by the occasional juicy
puff coming from astern. Here, Al (3854) is defending against the
nearest boats, Mark (r) and
Alastair (2nd from right).

The wind is now light enough
that Marc is holding the spinnaker sheet "short", i.e. he is holding it
from just aft of the shroud and bypassing all the blocks. This puts
less sheet weight on the clew of the spinnaker and lets Marc ease the
sheet without friction interference from said blocks. The barberhauler
is partially on in order to keep the sheet from getting wedged in
between the boom and the shroud.
