Al (l) gambles that he can win the "foot race" without defending against the others. Off by himself, he is freer to go up in the lulls and down with the puffs. So he expects that he will ultimately gain from this and also benefit from the fact that Richard, Heider and Mark will be fighting each other and therefore going slower. No real need to defend the left of this run, as there is the gate option at the leeward mark, and buoy room is less of an issue. Nick (864) meantime ...

... most of the rest of the fleet is closely bunched:
(l to r)
Andrew, Nick, Heider, Mark, John C, Richard, Fred, Ted, John de B.
...

It speaks well for the sailing level in our fleet that the ability gap between top and bottom is very small. All our boats are being well sailed with fine speed, and it's the small things being done by the veterans that are making the difference.

Following Al (not seen) around the right-hand gate mark are John Cawthorne (2nd) and Heider Funck (3rd).
Just visible under Heider's boom is Nick who is coming in from the right side, and will be ...

As the photographer is about to take a long time-out, we can see Al (3854) defending his lead by placing himself between the nearest pursuers and the next mark. About to round are Mike and Kirk (CAN90) with Geoff Edwards (9483) in hot pursuit, while Ted (3133), Fred (7973) and Alan (8745) are neck and neck as they get close to the gate.    - for full-size pic, click here
