The first run: Al and Dave have
the lead, but Dave shows his spinnaker inexperience by drastically
oversheeting here. The spi should be constantly eased to the point of a
luff curl. If the pole is not too far aft (which here, it is not, this
being a run!), that gets the spi foot well clear of the forestay and
lets the foot point straight at the water instead of in towards the
boat (see next picture).

In this shot from the 2007
Pumpkin, Dave himself (3854) shows how the result should look!! ... |
Frank (648) and Alastair fight
it out for 2nd place. ... |
Heider (l) is also right in that mix. ... |
Both these spinnakers could also
be set better!! Note how the foot is in each case, angles in towards
the jib. ... |

up in the path of a large fleet of big boats finishing a distance race
at the Port Credit YC next door. ... |

Al, who could stand to let his
pole forward a bit to keep the chute foot off the jib, continues to
lead near the leeward mark. ... |
There! A perfectly set chute!
Mark and Paul. ... |
Two more nicely trimmed
