the 2008 North Bay Wayfarer Weekend

Thursday, June 26th: supper time, and on a run up Highway 11, where else does one stop but the legendary Webers just north of Orillia?
...

Everything went swimmingly until just past Gravenhurst, where - as Julia and I reminded each other - things usually open right up, even on the worst of traffic days. We spoke too soon, however: less than five minutes later Al was able to step out for a smoke and get a picture of our "rig". Luckily for us, this tie-up lasted less than half an hour. It had been caused by someone who had managed to completely burn their car! As we passed it, all that was left was the smoking metal framing.

The sun was setting as we checked into ...
...

... our digs which sit up a cliff from the North Bay YC and overlook Callander Bay.

Carol Hansman's sister, Cathy Jessup (r), was already on registration duty at the club
where she was happy to take money from Team Mystic, Sue Pilling and Steph Romaniuk.
...

Some new blood (so to speak) this year: a local team fresh from winning the Ontario Sea Cadets sailing championship in Kingston,
Taylor Marsh (l) and Ryan Willick - normally Laser sailors - will be racing with us in one of the NBYC club Wayfarers.
...

Friday morning: Once again, SHADES added a touch of class to the premises. But only briefly, as we soon ...
...

... headed down the hill to the NBYC boat park where ...
...

... Andrew Haill and Lori Beehler had just rolled in after a very early morning start from Ottawa.
Greetings and hugs were duly exchanged with Julia Schonborn (r).
...

Activity was not long in picking up.

Ross Jamieson checks out the mainsheet arrangement on the club W he'll be sailing.

Steph Romaniuk demonstrates the ...

... homemade supports he's added to Mystic's jib cleats to keep them at a suitably "up" angle.
And just think of the valuable extra buoyancy these wine bottle corks will add!!

No sign of wind as yet!

Uncle Al models not only his brand new W cap, but also the ...

... 2008 Wayfarer Nationals feed bag that came with registration.
...

A little "code flags test" has been rigged for us by Regatta Chairman, Dave Hansman. Hint: two words, both start with W.
...

Skippers' Meeting coming up. Sue Pilling explains the likely course to Taylor Marsh (white shirt),
the local rising young star who is about to be interviewed by the North Bay Nugget (r).

The Skippers' Meeting: Regatta Chairman, Dave Hansman welcomes us and explains the basics of the upcoming "cruise" race.
...

Anne McNutt explains the start sequence that she and husband, Fred (sitting on picnic table), will be using to start us from shore.

Meanwhile, our Nugget reporter, Jennifer Hamilton-McCharles, keeps right on working.
