Start time nears, and our Race Committee, Fred and Anne (l) are about set to begin our countdown.
That looks like the same horn Fred used to use to start us on Trout Lake in the 70s and 80s.
It certainly sounded the same - brought back lovely memories!!
...

This kind of start gives spectators a great view of the start line action:
...

Ross Jamieson and John Simmonds check out the start line and the winds - or lack thereof - on Callander Bay.
...

As do Al and Julia.
...

The countdown has begun and the jockeying for position starts.
...

Andrew and Lori make it out just in time.
...

The first leg of our race was to mark #6 of the NBYC's fixed set of marks.
...

The wind was such that it would be hard to cross the line on starboard,
and the direction to the first mark made an early tack to port essential.

Andrew and Lori begin their "line sit" while ...
...

... Dave Hansman (282) and Ross Jamieson are just now getting back from sailing a bit of the first leg to test winds.
...

Still working on bringing their borrowed W up to snuff are Taylor Marsh and Ryan Willick (l).
Do I detect a broken boom-end mainsheet block?
...

An RC's-eye view of our start: Uncle Al (r) and Dave Hansman have gotten off to
the best starts with quick tacks to port where they are already laying #6.
...

(r to l) Dave Hansman, Uncle Al, Dave Richardson and Ross Jamieson are in the driver's seat. Since we are all laying the mark, Ross should be footing for speed here, at all costs avoiding pinching up into the wind shadows of the boats further to windward! I recall Julia warning me that we were getting awfully close to the leeward Dave Hansman here. Dave was indeed pointing very well and going higher than I wanted to go. But in the end ...
...

... Julia and I managed to foot down over Dave and Carol, which took away some of the nervous tension and allowed us to ...
...

... get the camera out, and record the fact that ...
...

... Carol and Dave had sailed up across our wake and were now moving discouragingly well, i.e. better than we were!!
