the 2008 North Bay Wayfarer Weekend
Don Rumble/Nats: race 2.1
photos by Julia Schonborn & Cathy Jessup

...

The first beat: Sue and Steph cross Andrew and Lori. The rain has stopped for now, but winds remain shifty and gusty.
...

Michele and Al hike their little hearts out. Jib needs to come in a fair bit!
...

Uncle Al bears away for ...
...

... Frank who ...
...

... apologizes when really, he should be watching for further starboard boats. A quick yell from Al helped Frank and Sue
avoid a serious crash here. If a crash is imminent, remember that both boats should luff up, which minimizes damage.
...

Also coming across on starboard is Andrew.
...

Taylor and Ryan: I was going to critique Taylor's position as being too far aft - the helm should be sitting with his forward knee touching the thwart. But a closer look seems to reveal that their tiller extension is out of service. When this happened to me in conditions like these at Fanshawe, I tied (clove hitch) a thin line around the end of the tiller (against the aft edge of the tiller extension nub), heeled the boat enough to ensure consistent weather helm, and steered by increasing or decreasing pull on the rope. Worked very well!!
...

Frank is, I believe, just completing his Penalty Turns for the Sue incident.
...

Off the NBYC yacht basin: The port lay line is once again a popular destination in race 2.
...

View from the RC boat as the first beat progresses: Harry Budden (l) and Fred McNutt
...
Reverse angle view: Here's how we looked to Cathy Jessup who was taking pictures from shore at the club.
...

Coming in along the port lay line are ...
...

... Dave Hansman (282), Alastair Ryder-Turner (10137) and Rob Wierdsma (7372).
...

Frank (r) has caught right back up to Sue.
...

Andrew and John (7351) cross tacks near the windward mark.
...

Also needing to get their jib far further in are Robin and Andy (6071) who will now meet ...
...

... Al (3854) and ...
...

... Taylor.
...

Taylor checks out whether the leading boats can lay the mark yet. (l to r) Ross, John, Mark, Taylor
...
A lull (for most) near the windward mark
...
Andrew (3140) heads for a meeting with Ross.
...

Even (especially??) lacking an extension tiller, Taylor should not have his main cleated and its end lying loose in the boat as it is here.
This close to the windward shore there are frequent big shifts and gusts which could easily cause a ...
...

... capsize!!!
...

Harder than doing this with a Laser, eh, guys??!!
...

Success! Now dive for that main and get it uncleated before you re-capsize!!
Also get the board full up and rag sails completely while you bail. Alernatively ...
...

... a tow in ...
...

... would be nice! And so, a DNF for Taylor and Ryan who wave good-bye for the day.
