the
2008 North Bay Wayfarer Weekend Don Rumble/Nats: race 3.2 photos by Julia Schonborn ... |
The 2nd reach was as close
as
the first had been broad, making it a ... ... |
... very close spinnaker
reach
as the wind started to pick up again: (l
to r) Dave H, John, Andrew ... |
Mark and Paul continue to
extend
their lead, while Al and Michele (red
spi) have moved much closer to 4th than they
once were. - for full-size pic, click here ... |
The second beat: Looking
relaxed
as befits their big lead are Mark and Paul (r). ... |
The Hansmans remain 2nd and
... ... |
... Granny looks happier
now
that it's stopped raining. ... |
Al has parlayed Michele's
fine
spinnaker work into a 3rd at the leeward mark and is now
off to the (so
far) blessed left side. ... |
As are John (7351), Andrew
(3140) and Ross (8) while Frank and Kim (648) complete a
quiet reach
towards the leeward mark. ... |
The Taylors did it right:
They
put themselves between pursuit and the next mark. ... |
Meanwhile, Uncle Al
loves his
position as he passes the start/finish area: He's in his
favourite spot
- to leeward and ahead of Dave (282) and John (7351) on
the lifted tack
with a knock to be reasonably expected as the next
oscillation in wind
direction. This is, of course, playing the odds, and
here the unusual
happened: the long shot came in. But more of this later.

Note how close Andrew
and Lori
were to the RC/photography boat as they passed it. In
other words, they
were pretty much on the rhumb line when at this time,
the 45°+ lift
came for starboard tack that converted the rest of the
beat into a
close reach for them. Those of us who had gone left were
now screwed,
and the further left/ahead one was the worse the effect
of this shift,
one that would prove to last out the rest of the race.
...
|
Ross and John now have the
lift
and are nearly laying the mark. ... |
As are Alastair and Andrew
who
who were ... ... |
... virtually right on the
rhumb
line when the shift hit. ... |
They have the windward edge
over
Andrew and Lori (3140) but that will be useless to
Alastair if Andrew continues to lay the mark without having to tack. ... |
A few boats were so far
left
that they still hadn't had the shift reach them by this
time: (l to r) Dave,
Sue, Dwight ... |
Al Nichols (7380) and Rob
Wierdsma are still in the "old" wind. ... |
Robin and Andy have the
"new"
wind. ... |
...
|
So far the new wind seems
to
have not come far past the rhumb line. Certainly, none of these boats here have the wind yet that is blessing Andrew and Alastair. - for full-size pic, click here |
