Mark and Paul Taylor Dominate Rain-soaked Don Rumble Memorial

The 2008 Don Rumble Memorial provided perhaps the toughest sailing conditions ever coped with by the event's competitors. Cool weather that barely cracked 20°C was laced with repeated downpours, and the only saving grace was the fact that we did have wind. But even the wind was shifty and gusty, ranging from 5 to 15 knots more or less out of the SE. To top it all off, our windward mark was placed close enough to the windward shore to make the mark approach into a minefield of shifts and dead spots.

Rain partially obscures photographer, Julia Schonborn's view of the fleet.

Watch out, Frank (W648)! Lots of upwind shifts made it essential to keep a good lookout!

Winners, Mark and Paul Taylor, took it all in stride.

And Mark and Paul Taylor were on top of it all, scoring 4-1-1-1 finishes to win the 4-race, no-drop series hosted on Sat 28 June by the North Bay YC. Well back in second place was defending champion, Al Schonborn, who this year teamed up with Michele Dicker. Considering Michele only sails about once a year, she coped very well with the very difficult conditions of this day, and enabled Uncle Al to beat out several teams with far more experienced crews.

One of those teams was Dwight and Pat Aplevich of Conestoga. These past Don Rumble champions began their series very well and held the series lead after 1-3 finishes. But a subsequent 8-6 dropped them into series 3rd by the end of the day.

Two-time Don Rumble winners, John and Dolores de Boer, rebounded from a first-race 10th with 2-4-3 placings that left them in a tie with Alastair and Andrew Ryder-Turner just one point out of series 3rd.

In 6th place, we had another tie: former Don Rumble winner, Frank Goulay with Kim Bergevin tied at 26 points with Andrew Haill and Lori Beehler who took the tie-breaker due to their excellent 2nd in race 3. The latter were also the 2008 Don Rumble's Most Improved team while taking turns at the helm.

Three teams ended up within one point of each other in an 8th-place battle. Al Nichols and Ken Nethercott ended up beating out a pair of local teams by that one point, and Dave and Carol Hansman took that decision in a tie-breaker over Sue Pilling and Steph Romaniuk.

Two more North Bay teams fought it out for series 11th, with Ross Jamieson and John Simmonds edging out Dave Richardson and Kim Rainville by only two points. Former CL-er, Rob Wierdsma made his long anticipated Wayfarer circuit debut with daughter, Samantha (15), and edged out the freshly constituted Ottawa team of Robin Allardyce and Andy Douma, a pair of alternating helms.

Two youngsters whom we were heartily glad to see were Taylor Marsh (16) and Ryan Willick (15), just crowned as Ontario Sea Cadet champions. Alas, they were unable to demonstrate their skills effectively as their borrowed club Wayfarer suffered gear failure of various sorts, and the lads were able to complete only one race.
