Charlotte, North Carolina's Catawba
Yacht Club hosted the Old Brown Dog Regatta on
October 15-16. Wayfarers and MC Scows enjoyed a
Poker Run on Saturday and a Pursuit Race on Sunday.
A fun weekend of sailboat racing.
The Poker Run was a lot of fun. Each skipper was given one playing card and they were to collect one card from each of the three marks. The cards were attached to the marks with clothes pins and the skippers could choose which of the three marks to go to first and in which order. It was anybody’s race as the wind changed all over the lake. Finally they all headed back to the club, where they received their fifth card based on when they reached the dock. Competitors were not allowed to open the cards that they received from the marks until the end of the evening of festivities, when their poker hand was revealed to them. AnnMarie Covington and John MacAdam won the Poker Run with three aces! The pursuit race was one design and the start times were based upon seeding handicaps developed with years of results data. The lowest seeded boat/skipper goes first and so on 'til the first-seeded boat goes last. The time spread between the first boat and the last boat to start was about 15 minutes. The race took about an hour and a half. David and Anne Pugh, in from Oakville, Ontario and sailing W11336 Fetch on loan from Richard Johnson, started last but overcame their handicap to finish first. Locals, Jim Cook and Mike Taylor, who started second to last, had climbed back into second place halfway through the race when Ali Kishbaugh and Mike Sigmund found a wind streak that allowed them to overtake Jim. Ali was able to fight off Jim's repeated attempts to pass until just seconds before the finish - exciting! All the competitors agreed that the 2022 Old Brown Dog Regatta was lots of fun and are looking forward to next year's regatta. Click here for regatta photos.
