The 2022 Old Brown
Dog Regatta held on October 14-16th at Catawba
Yacht Club on Lake Wylie gets high scores for
great fun, a great event, great people and great
competition. In terms of what makes a great
regatta, it gets high scores all around.
Is it
the competitors? - A great bunch
of people who race intensely but don't hold a
grudge. If you saw the final 4 competitors on
the last day do a side-by-side pinwheel around
the last mark you would know what I mean.
Is it
the sponsors? - Catawba Yacht
Club, Jim Cook, his compatriots and supporters
were wonderful.
Is it
the help provided by the club when launching
your boat? - One pickup was
designated to help launch boats to speed the
process under tight space conditions.
Is it
the cleanliness of the club and
facilities? - Spotless and kept
that way all weekend.
Is it
the weather? - Which was dry and
windy on Saturday and dry and spotty on
Sunday.
Is it
the view? - Which was fall leaf
color photographically picture post-card
spectacular.
Is it
the food which was fresh and made available on
time?
Is it
the course design which was challenging and
unique? - A poker run with 1 visible card,
then 3 hidden pickups, one at each mark (your
choice of mark sequence), then 1 more visible
card upon arrival. A long-distance
pursuit race with start times based on Al's
seeds.
Is it
the entertainment on Saturday night? - A live
karaoke keyboard/guitar player and sing along
Is it
the camping on site to keep costs down?
- On the beach. On the property
under the trees looking out over the lake
. In the parking lot
In summary,
I had a fantastic time and look forward to next
year's event.
