2024 Jim Cook One-Design Regatta

A beautiful fall weekend greeted 23 sailing teams at Catawba Yacht Club on Lake Wylie, Charlotte, NC for the annual Jim Cook One Design Regatta, October 19-20, 2024.  Cool mornings and evenings gave way to mild days under bright sunshine.  A consistent breeze of 5-8 blew steady both days out of the Northeast.  All of this made for one of the best editions of the Jim Cook One Design Regatta ever.  13 Wayfarers and 10 MC Scow teams competed for top three places in each class.

PRO Chris Kicinski and the CYC race committee ran four races on Saturday and 2 more Sunday morning.  John and Mary Driver won the Wayfarer class. Jim Heffernan/Lynn Abram and Peggy Menzies/Katie Potter finished tied at 20 points each with the tiebreaker going to Jim and Lynn for second place while Peggy and Katie took third.

In the MC class, CYC’s Jan Havmoeller sailed four straight bullets in races 3-4-5-6 to take home first place.  2023 champion Dave Forrest was second and John Harrop took third.

At the awards ceremony, Ann Marie Covington presented gear bags to the teams who traveled the furthest and these went to John Kotsier/Ross Thompson and Peggy Menzies/Katie Potter.

Ali Kishbaugh presented the 2024 Jim Cook award to Jim Heffernan.

CYC threw its nationally renowned regatta party Saturday night.  Ron Wright and Jim Higgins played a one hour set of raucous party music.  That gave way to a variety of participant talent that included karaoke singing, a trumpet and bass performance by John Kotsier, and some beautiful guitar/voice solos by Nora Cook. A great time was had by all.
