Saturday: Race 3.4
by Kim Bergevin & Doug Netherton

...

Andrew (4610) rounds in 4th place with ...
...

... Jamie (l) close astern.
...

Main nicely eased to help W4594 turn onto the reach.
...

A nice hoist for Jamie and Ben - briefly easing the spi halyard a few inches will let the twist at the top undo itself.
...

Robin (6071) is about to round just in front of Alan (7346) and Jason (3140).
...

Jamie makes ...
...

... his move as Penny gets on-the-job spinnaker training aboard 4610.
...

2nd-place Brian (l) has 5 boats snapping at his heels: (l to r)  Jamie, Andrew, Dave, Robin, Bill
...

Not to mention Jason (3140) who is using a much nicer looking chute for this race!
...
Jamie (4594) challenges second-place Brian, but is himself threatened, as ...
...

... an exciting and scenic battle shapes up with the Quebec shore its usual pretty self in the background.
...

The excitement ...
...

... mounts!!
...

Jason and Lori move nicely.
...

With a reasonably comfortable lead, Al and Marc can afford to do a nice, slow, gradual gybe onto the second reach.
...
Coming down from well on the outside, Bill and Frank ...
....
... will have to keep clear of ...
...
... any inside boats that had an inside overlap as the boats entered the Two-Length Zone around the mark.
...
(l to r) Dave, Bill, Jamie, Andrew
...
Since the overlap line is drawn at right angles to the centreline of all four outside boats here, Brian (l) is entitled to room from all of them. Of course ...
...
... he does have to get there first, and he won't get there in time to call Dave or Bill. (Note the difference in apparent mast height!)
...
Brian does however, arrive in time to claim room from Jamie (4594) and Andrew. Jamie should have prepared this turn of events by staying high. Here he has come too close to Brian and will now end up taking ...
...
... costly evasive action!!
...
A nice recovery for Jamie who will at least now have the option of sailing high, unlike Andrew who is trapped to leeward of Brian.
...
Things are heating up a bit further back, too, as Jason and Lori (3140) try to slide through
between Alan (7346) and Robin (6071).
...
Aboard 7346, Tim tries to maximize his jib's performance by using the whisker pole to leeward.
...
Alas, it will be tough for Jason (3140) to get through Robin's wind shadow when the boats are this close together!
