Bill (937) gets the perfect
pin-end start while Marc (3854) ... ... |
... speeds away at the boat end.
Andrew (4610) has found just enough room to squeeze in between the RC
boat and Marc ... ... |
... but will be hard pressed to
escape ... ... |
... Marc's (3854) backwind. ... |
Marc and Bill (yellow hull) are
already ... ... |
... moving out. Tim (7346) got
a fine start but illustrates what Dave Dellenbaugh warns against in his
latest issue of Speed & Smarts, namely
starting just to windward of a known fast pointer like Bill Fyfe. Now
Tim is trapped since Lori (3140), Andrew (4610) and Brian (6082) all
have him pinned in a place where he can't tack!
... |
Bill (r) is moving ... ... |
... very well. Marc (3854) is in
no immediate danger of being backwinded, however, since he is well to
windward. ... |
The reverse angle view shows
Bill (937) moving out well, and Tim (7346) in a position where he might
be able to pinch up out of Bill's backwind. ... |
Poor Dave (2nd from right) is stuck in a
veritable tsunami of bad air and can't tack away ... ... |
... because ... ... |
... Robin (6071) is blocking him! ... |
Brian and John have Afternoon Delight in beautiful trim
as they head towards the Quebec shore. ... |
Robin and Carolyn chug along
behind Andrew and Penny. ... |
Marc (3854) really has SHADES moving well. ... |
Dave and Carol finally have Banshee in clear air and up to
warp speed. ... |
Aha! Bill (937) has tacked
across at last. Sitting at 2-2-2 after three races, Bill has made the SHADES (1-1-1) strategy simple: Go
more or less where Bill goes, and don't let him beat us by more than
one position. Here, we are well out towards the port-tack lay line, and
Bill wisely bears away rather than tacking to try to lee bow Marc
(3854) who might then trap him and push him right out to the lay line
where Bill would then end up having to sail all the way to the mark in SHADES' dirt, or having to overlay
the mark and lose distance that way.
... |
Reverse angle: Bill (937) bears
away for Marc (3854) but will clear Brian. ... |
A bit later, Marc (3854) has
tacked and cross Brian.. ... |
Brian (6082), Lori (3140) and
Tim (7346) have all dug in towards the middle but Andrew is
... ... |
... sticking to starboard for a
while longer. Dave (282) has finally decided to tack. ... |
Andrew (r) has tacked at last. Marc (2nd from right) has gone well past
any possible Bill Fyfe backwind and tacked. We're all overdue to dig
back in towards the middle. ... |
Reverse angle. ... |
Bill and Frank are moving well,
as are .... ... |
... Dave and Carol who have ... ... |
... Marc and Al as a pace boat
beside them. ... |
(l
to r) Andrew, Lori, Tim, Brian ... |
Dave (282) and Bill (937)
continue to hold port tack. |
