Big Sound Challenge
- Sail Parry Sound - August 6-7th, 2016
Two fleets participated again this year -
the Laser class had 10? Boats and the
Wayfarer's had 13 for their Provincial
Championships. It was a glorious hot summer
weekend with strong winds for two days of
sailing. The new town beach would've been a
great place to watch the two fleets, colourful
spinnakers and admire the skill needed to
pilot the sailboats. The sailors had their
work cut out for them as steady 30km/hr winds,
gusting to 50km/hr propelled them around the
race course. Seven races were completed and
competition was tight with 5 different race
winners in the Wayfarer class. The local
Wayfarer lightweights, Sue Pilling and Steph
Romaniuk, were unable to defend their
provincial title, but the trophy will remain
in Northern Ontario as it was awarded to Dave
Hansman and Dave Richardson of North Bay,
Ontario. Three teams from the United States
were also in attendance. Congratulations!
Sailing will continue for the cruising class
of Wayfarers at Killbear Provincial Park for
the week as they explore our beautiful region.
A platoon of volunteers made the event run
smoothly, including registration, race
committee and water support, and ground crew.
The Country Gourmet put on a fabulous BBQ
dinner and also provided lunches to the
racers. It sure was a treat to be able to pop
upstairs at Sail Parry Sound for a Belly ice
cream! Another successful event at our
burgeoning summer hot spot.
