The original race hut
..
2. left to right: Thelma and Pete Hanson discuss races with ???
..
3. l to r: Sarah Chu, Mike Schoenborn, Kay Johnston?, ??, Tom Johnston?, ??
..
4. Is that a young Sue (Goldt) at the left? Sarah Chu and Linda Owens contemplate ways to keep warm and busy
while Mike and Al are out racing.
..
5. Sarah, Mike and Kay?
..
Pete Hanson explains the wind shift he missed.
..
Beer break!
..
Linda shows what Uncle Al will need after the tough day's racing while Sarah tolerates Mike's antics.
Note the "old" chalet in the background. Those were the days - cold days!
..
Sarah and Thelma struggle to open a beer - just the thing for a 50F afternoon!
..
10. Tom Johnston (left) and Mike Schoenborn talk strategy.
..
Even at this much younger age, Uncle Al always kept an eye out for the essentials of comfort.
..
Linda Owens and Uncle Al are relegated to the end of the recliner...
..
... as skipper, Mike, takes over. Uncle Al feeds Thelma as Sarah looks on.
..
Beauties and the Beast.
..
Skipper, Mike, finds a new "vessel" to helm, making sure he has all the essentials:
pipe, Sailing Instructions in his jacket, and the Team Waratah secret weapon, Napoleon brandy.
No wonder the spiffy young Fireball sailors were looking down their noses at the Waratah crew, but the latter redeemed themselves but leading the other division winners such as Fireballs, a Tornado catamaran and Y-Flyers for most of the Champions of Champions Race on straight time before winning the short race by almost 15 minutes(!) on corrected time.
..
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Schoenborn
..
Two brothers fight over the place of honour - and the brandy!
..
Thelma and Pete prepare Pinafore for the Sunday's racing.
..
And they're off! Note the eclectic collection of classes attracted by the first Pumpkin!
..
Uncle Al (crew) and Mike back Waratah away from the dock and get set to hoist.
Not necessarily the recommended procedure!
...
Still, they are leading the "parade" as the W fleet close-reaches past the race hut.
..
Even then, Mike's sails were getting a bit worn out. The main was the one he bought so that he could
"Sail with a Hard on" as the slogan said in those days.
Note the old way of having the jib tack a few inches off the deck, the jib track on the side deck
and the mainsheet running straight to Mike's hand from the aft end of the boom!
