Too late, the former leaders come across to the better side: (l to r) Sue, John, Dwight, Harold, Dave   - for full-size pic, click here

Despite his belated start, local veteran, Jens Biskaborn, has ...   - for full-size pic, click here

... made inroads by playing the right side.
...

Here Jens and Sharon get a big knock and wisely ...
...

... tack to port before the guys from the far side, like Dave (4782) can cross them. This tack is not only keeping them to the favoured right side but is also at this moment letting them lay #2.
...

Doug and Françoise are giving the Biskaborns (r) a good run for their money, but ...
...

... further to the left, Dave and Kim have less wind and should ease the main some to go for speed.
...

Like the crew, the jib looks great!
...

While the guys off under the cliff to the right are close-reaching along on port, straight at #2, John (7351), Dwight (4606) and Harold (2304) are sailing a seriously knocked version of port tack. Tacking on this header won't do them any good, either, since that move would just take them further from the favoured right side. They are doing the right thing here, by just riding it out.
...

Ghosting along under the cliff, Andy Turnbull and ...
...

... his helm, Len Macdougall, are a study in concentration!
...

Out in the middle, Dwight (4606) and John (7351) are now ...
...

... somewhat lifted, as is ...
...

... Harold (2304). But none of them have as good a breeze as Al and Mike further to the right.
...

A nice little puff for Steve who is sailing this race with his wife ...
...

... Barb.
...

I've been trying and trying to think of something nice to say about the cruisers who are again
pissing around before their start without any regard to other boats racing, but - I can't!
...

Here, Dwight is moving along nicely, to windward and ahead of Harold (2304) and Steve (5625).
...

While a mess develops at mark #2 (far right), Al and Dave are gurgling along upwind towards the finish. Only Jens (l) and Steve (2nd from left) appear to have noticed that their leg has become a broad reach. This is one of the many times it pays to look around outside your boat, e.g. Harold, whose main is greatly oversheeted even if he were still closehauled, should be noticing how Al is trimmed and moving well for the conditions, and inferring from this that letting the sails way out would be worth a try.   - for full-size pic, click here

Oops! A big knock  for ...
...

... Dave (l) and Uncle Al. Note Al trying to bear away, but if it's too much of a knock ...
