the 2007 Pumpkin Regatta
Fanshawe YC * Sept. 29-30

...

Slowly but surely, Doug and Françoise creep towards the line and their ...
...

... 4th-place finish.
...

A nice recovery for Jens and Sharon who will place 5th despite their re-start.
...

Next to approach the finish line are ...
...

... Dwight and Pat who finally get a ...
...

... 90° lift as they cross 6th.
...

By the time that Steve (5625) and Dave (4782) take their fight over 7th near the line, the wind has shifted 180° ...
...

... or more!!!
...

As he prepares to finish, Dave casts a nervous glance astern where that sneaky Len is lurking.
...

Is this Sharon communicating ...
...

... her views about a truncated starting sequence to the RC ?
Or perhaps to photographer, Mary, standing on the beach under the race hut?
...

Phew! At last! Dave and Kim are about to finish.
...

At this time, the Y-Flyers were still racing, so God only knows what the heck was going on here!!!
...

Ah yes, Fanshawe! Len (9th) - perhaps three lengths ahead -
is sailing virtually the same closehauled direction as Harold (2304), but they're on opposite tacks!!
...

It's been a long race for Harold and young Mitchell (2304) who were doing so well for such a long time.
Meanwhile, Kevin Biskaborn, tootles along  towards a first-place finish in his new Laser.
...

John (7351) commiserates with Steve Carroll (W6066) who is about to take Laser 2nd in this race.
...

John (7351) edges oh so slowly closer to the finish line.
...

As Dave Richardson drifts across their bow, Al and Dave ...
...

... chat with Mary, and don't look too impressed with the thought of one more race.
...

Still, it's a pleasantly warm day in late September, so who can complain?!
...

Len still has enough energy to paddle! Wow!!
...
A nice little puff for former Wayfarer, Rick Goldt, who is about to finish ...
...

... 3rd among the Lasers, and just ahead of John and Tony (7351) who have made 10 other Wayfarers happy in this race. When these two decided not to sail race 3 - and who's to blame them?? - 7351 support team, Mary, muttered something about an alphabet finish for "her guys" on this day, I was was puzzled. She kindly laid it out for me: "DNF, DFL, DNC". And then the light went on: our Junior Club log book at Bronte used to be filled with DFL's, a scoring code not recognized in Appendix A of the ISAF RRS, but one usually uttered with a certain amount of feeling, standing as it does for "Dead F*cking Last".
