the 2007 Pumpkin Regatta Fanshawe YC * Sept. 29-30 race pics: Saturday - Race 6.2 by Carol Hansman ... |
As in the previous race, this
beat is a near-fetch on starboard, and Dwight (4606) gets first dibs, having rounded inside Jens (7663). ... |
Jens wisely went just far enough
on port to clear his air and has now tacked to
starboard. Al (3rd from left) has let himself
get stuck outside of Doug who slowed down quite a bit at the mark, but
who is now tacking away. - for full-size pic, click

Al, desperate to escape
Sue's (l) wind shadow, is
now tacking into a ...

... situation that is only
marginally less undesirable, on the premise that ... - for full-size pic, click here ... |
... he (5th from left) will

... tack back at the earliest
reasonable opportunity. Al is consoling himself with the fact that the
boats that went in closer to this shore on the recent reaching leg got better wind. - for full-size pic, click here ... |
Now we (l) have a lift on port, but the
three leaders (r to l) Dwight,
Jens and Sue are also lifted on starboard. - for full-size pic, click here ... |
On the right of the picture, we
can just see our leader, Dwight, disappearing behind the tree with Jens
in a solid 2nd behind him. Things do not look rosy for those closer to
this side of the lake: (l to r) Al,
Doug, Harold, Sue

As Harold (2304) slowly gets his
sails in for the beat, Doug has met Al (3854) coming along on starboard, and wisely tacked underneath him to keep clear. ... |
Dwight (r) spends a bit of his lead as he
tacks across on an unfavoured port slant before tacking back to starboard to position himself to windward and ahead of Jens. - for full-size pic, click here ... |
As Dwight and Pat pass the
start/finish line they tack with perfect timing onto ... ... |
... a juicy port-tack lift, one
which for a change ... ... |
... reaches all the leaders: (l to r) Al, Steve, Doug, Sue,
Jens - for

Right under the cliff, Al (3854)
gets a knock and tacks onto the corresponding starboard lift. Meanwhile, Dwight (r) and Jens (7663) and Doug (l) remain lifted on port. - for full-size pic, click here ... |
The wind has now come up to a
nice little hiking breeze, one which is, alas, being chopped up
somewhat by the cruisers who have just started their race in front of
us. Al (3854) is still going as close as is reasonably possible to the
moorings and had been lifted a bit inside Sue (4677).
... |
Al (l) and Dave have actually eased
their main a bit to keep SHADES
from heeling too much. ... |
The fight for the lead: Will
Dwight (4606, port) be able to clear Jens (7663, starboard)? Actually
... ... |
... the zoom factor is
misleading again: Note the relative apparent mast height, and you can
guess that ... ... |
... Dwight will cross with quite
a bit to spare. Meanwhile, Al (3rd
from left) has moved into 3rd, ahead of Doug (1366) and Sue (l). - for full-size pic, click here ... |
Al (3854) tacks back across, not
willing to let Sue (4677) get the inside track along the moorings.

A minute or so later: (l to r) Doug, Sue and Jens
continue ... ... |
... on a nicely lifted starboard
tack in a perfect breeze. ... |
Approaching Carol on the beach
are ... ... |
... Harold and Mitchell who ... ... |
... then tack onto the nicely
lifted starboard tack. ... |
Al tacks across towards the
mooring once more where Dwight (r)
and Sue (2nd from right) are
looking great. (W's, l to r): Mike, Steve, Doug, Al, Jens, Sue, Dwight - for full-size pic, click here ... |
