Our 2002 Rally venue was Burton
Island State Park, at the north end of Lake
Champlain near the town of St. Albans. |
|
We launched at ... |
|
... a nicely
maintained ramp in the mini-harbour used by the
small ferry that shuttled back and forth from here
to Burton Island, a ferry that was appreciated by
a number of us who had excess baggage (such as
small children!) and/or a fear of Thursday's winds
gusting to over 20 knots once you got around the
point and sailed towards the state park by heading
off to the right. ... |
|
Rally leader, Dick Harrington, loads
up Blue Mist. |
|
Tom Erickson from Gardner,
Massachusetts, hooks up Possum's jib
furling gear, as ... |
|
... his wife, Diane, supervises. |
|
Jake Maarse has arrived from Coburg,
Ontario with Aalsmeer. |
|
All in all, we added a nice touch to
that little parking lot. |
|
Montreal's Mary Waterhouse greets
Shirley Pegler and her kids, Stephanie and Drew, |
|
Tom and Diane (275) are about to hit
the true wind as they get out onto scenic St.
Albans Bay. |
|
I do hope Tom is ready for a sudden
gybe when the real wind kicks in - any second
now!!! |
|
Commodore Harrington has launched.
And it's a beautifully sheltered spot for it, too! |
|
Uncle Al's SHADES
gets literally loaded to the gunwales before
launching, with gear for three people: Frank
Goulay, Lucy Camacho and Al. One storage problem
was solved when Frank volunteered to sail across
to Burton Island with Kevin Pegler whose wife and
young kids had opted for the ferry as a safer way
of crossing. That left Lucy and me to sail our
boat across - a beat all the way!! I still recall
that we limited our tacks as much as possible what
with there being virtually no room for our legs to
actually hit the floor boards. Still, it was a fun
sail on a lovely hot afternoon and we
... ... |
|
... navigated over to Burton without
any problems, despite ... |
|
... the pretty healthy winds. Here,
from the stable platform of the marina dock, we
could enjoy watching ... |
|
... Keith Brewer and Alan Waterhouse
wending their way across with a nicely reefed
mainsail |
|
... they reached the sheltered waters
of the Burton Island SP's marina. |
|
Mary Waterhouse welcomes the intrepid
mariners. Having taken the ferry, Mary is dry! |
|
Ivan and Suzanne Pedersen of
Pickering, just east of Toronto, brought Akvavit across under
full sail, and they, too, were very ready to ... |
|
... rag their sails as required. |
|
Soon, Ivan and Suzanne were romping
at full speed into the marina. |
