Uncle Al's Scrap Book: Saturday, the 13th
pics by Julia and Al Schonborn

Well, the computer map above certainly made the 12-hour drive from Oakville, ON to Hermit Island, Maine seem like nothing much. Julia and I left on Friday afternoon, the 12th of August, looking forward to escaping from what had seemed like an endless series of hot, muggy days in this summer of 2005. By dusk, we had made it to Utica, NY where we booked a hotel room just off the New York Thruway, polished off a dinner at a Denny's across the street, and made it back into our room just before the heavens opened up.
...

The next morning was cloudy and not too hot, but the forecast promised another hot, oppressive day. We followed the computer-recommended route through a seemingly endless series of toll booths until we hit ...
...

... New Hampshire where we drove along that state's short 18-mile stretch of ...
...

... Atlantic coast on Rte 1A where Al was hoping to figure out the location of the fictitious ...
...

...  town of Tyler Beach, home to Lewis Cole in a series of lovely mysteries written by Brendan DuBois. No such luck but we did enjoy dawdling through streets crowded with surfers and other beach fans.
...

Thus, it was nearly 5 p.m. on Saturday when we arrived.
...

Soon, Julia and I had our nearly new tent pitched on our small, rather rustic site at ...
...

... 10 Branch. The ground the tent would stand on may have been a bit bumpy, but ...
...

... the view out our front door was most certainly lovely.
...

Julia braves the "bugs" to check out the outgoing tidal waters.
...

Having decided not to overdo the roughing it by bringing along cooking utensils or food, we needed to pick the brain of Tom Graefe, our "native guide", who recommended that we try Popham (above) as the location of the nearest restaurant.
...

Soon, we were on our way north on Rte 216 which afforded us the occasional look across the water at Hermit Island , which would be our home for the coming week.
...

As the sun set about 15 minutes later, we reached the tiny village of Popham and ...
...
... Spinney's restaurant with its 45-minute wait on this Saturday night.
...

While waiting for our meal (haddock & chips which was nothing special), we admired ...
...

... the lovely ...
...

... sunset views ...
...

... all ...
...

... around.
...

It was indeed ...
...

... a lovely place ...
...

... to wait!
