the Hermit
Island Wayfarer Rally Small Point, Maine * August 13-20, 2005 Uncle Al's Scrap Book: Monday, the 15th - 2 pics by Julia and Al Schonborn |
... anything but gentle
when it meets rocks like ... ... |
... the Wood Island Ledge. ... |
We tack away from the south
end of Wood Island and its foamy rocks as ... ... |
... Chuck and Ginny ... ... |
... Julia and ... ... |
... Al enjoy another
relaxing sail. ... |
I think this is Wallace
Head near the south end of Hermit Island, followed by ... ... |
... Head Beach. ... |
Chuck identified this
fellow as a type of loon? ... |
Even our very quiet
approach scares off some of the wildlife. Meanwhile a slight breeze is
coming up. Off to the SW, we can see in the distance what must
be East Brown Cow Island, only a couple of miles away. With an
actual
breeze of about 5 knots now blowing, we decide to circumnavigate this
little patch of rocks, bearing in mind that the tide will turn within
the hour and will carry us back into Small Point Harbour if the wind
should quit or, God forbid, the ubiquitous Maine fog should roll in.

The swells are quite
impressive when ... ... |
... they meet resistance! ... |
Just a tiny sample of ... ... |
... nature's awesome power!! ... |
But this does not seem to
bother the lobster pot buoy. ... |
It's hard to stop clicking
away with the camera when the sights are so beautifully impressive! ... |
Of course, it's just an
ordinary day at the office ... ... |
... for the gulls and other
... ... |
... airborne wildlife! ... |
A last couple of shots of
the surf on ... ... |
... East Brown Cow, and
it's time ... ... |
... to spinnaker back into
Small Point Harbour. The deceptive swells and a dying breeze make
flying the spinnaker tricky but ... ... |
... Julia hasn't forgotten
how! ... |
We rolled up into The
Branch with the incoming tide, seeing the occasional reminder (above)
that high tide does not just cover mud flats. We hit something like
this passing the south end of Goose Rock near high tide the very next
day - tsk! tsk! ... |
It was a fairly safe bet
that the moored boats marked the deepest water. ... |
Our timing was good: we
arrived to a fully occupied floating dock just as Ron, Lori and ... ... |
...Robin were vacating their spot with a view to hoisting
their sails at one of the moorings. We later heard they'd had a tough
time. Perhaps we should have stuck around but at the time we were all
pretty ready for a ... ... |
... late
afternoon nap (see wake-up view from our tent above) before
meeting at Chuck and Ginny's site for a Guinness, after which they took
us to a lovely pizza place in Bath (where the
pizza was so good that we would dine there
no fewer than
three times during our stay). Chuck, who feels
about pool the way Al does about sailing, had an ulterior motive
though: once we had finished our delicious pizzas, he treated us to
drinks in the downstairs bar which had pool tables where Chuck got in a
few games before we called it a fairly early night - the local pool
sharks were quite impressed (as were Julia and I) when they saw that
Chuck had brought his own cue!!
