Subject: Hermit Island 2014 - 9th Up Date

Sat. Aug 16 - Fri. Aug 22, 2014

Participant up dates:  Some or all of you may have already seen some of this information.  Unfortunately the Pegler family will be unable to attend this year's rally because Kevin injured his back battling the hurricane earlier this year.  See his email below. We were all looking forward to seeing them after a lengthy absence.

Eric Laux is unable to join Brian as he is starting a new job.  Brian is hoping to find some members to crew with him.

Margie Harkins says Bill's mother has been in and out of the hospital several times recently.  They could be affected by this.

My grandson Tristan Ketcham from Austin is unable make it due to school conflicts but Cassie and Kyle Duff will still be sailing with me.  I'm hoping someone can lend me good PFD.  Cassie (13) wears a woman's size small.  Kyle is average size for 11.

New additions David Coombs and Kate will be camping at site ET 2.

Cruising Safety:  I'll be mailing you separately the safety DECLARATION.  I will appreciate it very much if you return this document to me stating "I so declare" along with the skippers name and sail number.

Praying for better weather.............DICK

Hi Al

It’s official,  Shirl and I will not be attending the Rally. The doctor has given me the “no go” order. I have ruptured a disk and I can tell you it is not a pleasant experience. I hope to be able to get some light day sailing in sometime in the future. It is a shame as I was really looking forward to the trip. Have a great time!

Cheers,

Kev

Dear Rally Participants:

Attached is the latest participant list for your reference.  I'll keep you updated as changes take place. You'll notice I'm expecting three of my grandkids to join Jane and me: Tristan Ketcham (15), Cassie Duff (13) and Kyle Duff (11).  Tristan, who is coming from Austin, TX, attended the 2012 Rally; while Cassie and Kyle are from from Ellicott City, MD.  Kyle was at last year's rally at Killbear Park.  Cassie is a first-timer.  The three of them will be able to pal around with Quinn Ring.

When we get closer to the rally dates we can begin laying down some specific activity plans.  For now please review the following safety requirements and let me know if you have any questions.  (BTW, I may be looking to find out if anyone has extra PFD's I can borrow.)

Safety requirements:  Remember, it is the responsibility of the boat's skipper/owner to ensure the safety of his vessel and its crew.  If you are skippering someone else's boat that responsibility transfers to you.  As the event organizer I'm responsible for providing guidance to new participants, as well as general overall advice.  As fellow Wayfarers with a wealth of experience, I expect others to provide sage advice also.  The waters we'll be sailing can quickly become challenging, with sizable waves and dangerous reefs. Skippers need to be experienced dinghy sailors and should attempt to learn the limitations of their crew.

I ask that everyone take the DECLARATION below seriously.

Pleasant sailing......DICK

DECLARATION

HERMIT ISLAND RALLY - 2014

I DECLARE THE FOLLOWING TO BE TRUE:
1. I am satisfied that the buoyancy within my boat meets the requirements set out in the Wayfarer Class Rules and will permit self-rescue in case of a capsize.  2. I have checked, and am satisfied that the boat and all its fittings, including the rigging, are seaworthy. 3. I have the capability of reducing sail quickly and efficiently while on the water.  4. My crew and I will be sailing with adequate weatherproof clothing and personal buoyancy.  5. I will meet all USCG requirements with respect to small boat safety equipment.  6. I will be fully insured to cover damage to other craft and personal liability. 7. I have read the Boat Checklist (below) and will comply with the requirements.      Furthermore, while I appreciate that every effort will be made to ensure everyone’s safety, I understand that ultimately, I alone am responsible for deciding whether or not my abilities are sufficient to allow me to go or stay out on the water at any given time during this event.  In matters of safety, I will err on the side of caution, and I recognize that I will be sailing entirely at my own risk.
