Wayfarer Silver: J.P. Mann (r) with Scott McCarthy and RHYC Commodore, Todd Steffes

How we all fared in the series

U.S. Nationals winners, seeded 1st, counting three firsts and one 2nd: Peggy Menzies (Michigan) and daughter, Maggie Helmen (Colorado)

2nd place, unseeded, from Quannapowitt YC,
Boston, counted 2-3-2-3-3: J.P. Mann with Scott McCarthy

Series 3rd, Richard Johnson with wife, Michele, one point behind series 2nd, seeded 5th; 3-2-4-4-1

Who would have thought it? Oakville, Ontario's Uncle Al, seeded 7th of 8 entries teamed up with Mike Codd, his freshly appointed minder and won a tie-breaker to beat Jim Heffernan and granddaughter, Claire, out of series 4th and thus taking Most Improved honours for this event. Indeed, Mike and Al won the first race but then discovered that one end of their bridle was pulling out of the transom and so decided to make the long trip back to the club where Mike used his Boy Scout expertise to forage for a longer, more substantial screw to replace the one pulling out. A repair was duly made. We had missed two races but did get to sail to a 3rd in race 4. A less than impressive 5-4 on the Sunday completed our series

Series 5th, as mentioned went to Jim (North Carolina, Lake Townsend YC, and Claire (New Jersey). Not dunking Claire was job 1 for Jim and he reefed a number of times. This made the return
to her spiritual home of W8705 which was built by the late Frank Pedersen of the Rock Hall YC a success.

Ali Kishbaugh (Lake Townsend YC, NC) teamed up with Jim Heffernan's younger son, Paul, and placed series 6th.

Lake Townsend's Uwe Heine and wife, Nancy Collins, sailed Anansi to 7-4-4 finishes before moving on to meet family obligations elsewhere - I think.

After a very promising 2nd-place finish in the first race, our 2nd seeds, John and Mary Driver of the
West River SC near Annapolis, MD, capsized at the windward mark in race 2 and things went downhill from there ...

Hi Al,

After capsizing at the windward mark and the mast getting stuck in the mud, it took a long time to get the boat back upright.  We were covered in mud and decided to head back to land to clean up. On getting back to land, we found our rented pickup truck would not start and waited the rest of Saturday for the truck company to turn up. They eventually arrived in the evening and decided that the truck had to be towed away with no replacement yet found.

Overnight we were told that the rental company would be picking us up at 8:30am Sunday morning for us to collect a new truck. The company finally arrived at 11:00am Sunday and after being rerouted several times finally took us to Annapolis for a replacement vehicle which turned out to be a box truck. We then arrived back at Rock Hall around 5:00pm. Not one of our best weekends.

Best regards,

John
