daughter, Julie, a Saturday pre-race spinnaker refresher course. ... |
Don Thwing and Mark Olgaard
check out the line prior to race 1. ... |
Nick and Julie check their
upwind settings before the first race. ... |
Joe Blackmore has the helm
while Frank Goulay makes sure everything is shipshape aboard KGB. ... |
Joe DeBrincat (l)
and Doug Ryan enjoy a close battle up the initial race 1 beat with the
lovely Tawas Point in the background. ... |
When you beat towards the
Point, you should - according to the local experts - play the left
side, i.e. hold starboard towards the yacht club. Uncle Al (3854), Don
Thwing (2960) and Al Fick have done this on the first beat. ... |
It's a quick, efficient
spi hoist from Marc (red spi) as Uncle Al rounds onto the first run
just ahead of Nick Seraphinoff (l). Frank Goulay is about to
round 3rd, just ahead of Don Thwing and Doug Ryan. Meanwhile, on the
far right, Joe DeBrincat is just crossing Al Fick.
... |
It's a lovely-looking and
closely-bunched fleet as Uncle Al (l) has gybed back to
starboard in search of more (wind) pressure. ... |
The action remains close. ... |
Uncle Al and ... ... |
... Nick (864) and Frank
are seen playing the right side of the run here as they near the RC
boat which was stationed about 1/3 of the way up the leg from the
leeward mark. This side of the course had seemed to provide better wind
up the beat, and was thus worth a try on the run.
... |
Mark Olgaard in 2960 is
milking every possible ounce of speed from their ancient W6090 (John de
Boer) spinnaker, and so far, he and Don are managing to hold off Joe
DeBrincat and Bob Frick with their brand new Quantums. ... |
Mike Anspach and Paul McVey
(4271) appear to be fishing with their spinnaker, no doubt to the
delight of Al Fick (3488) and Doug Ryan (3664)!! ... |
Lovely boats in a lovely
spot!! ... |
Looks like a real haul for
fisherman Mike as Doug and Chris (l in 3664) run away in a nice
little puff. ... |
Don and Mark looking good ... |
Mike and Paul have finally
retrieved their spinny and are now looking fine as they pursue Al and
Dave in 3488 where helm Al is sitting way too far aft and is dragging
his stern. ... |
Uncle Al makes the tiller
switch behind his back to complete yet another roll tack as he and Marc
will defend the left once more against ... ... |
... Nick ... ... |
... Frank (648) and Doug
(3664). Doug and Chris are sitting way forward and lifting their
transom out of the water, something which works well in the really
light stuff but probably won't help here where the boats are nearing
hull speed! ... |
Uncle Al and Marc tack
across the finish line to win race 1. ... |
That old 1994 mainsail
still looks good in its 12th year of hard and frequent use!!! ... |
Frank and Joe roll tack
across the line to complete a nice comeback in 2nd place, just ahead of
... ... |
... Nick and Julie.
Doug and Chris (l) will end up in 4th place. ... |
Nick and Julie get their
finish beep from daughter/sister, Emily. |
