Warm Water/Ontario Championship Regatta 2022

Conestoga SC * August 21-22

Variable Conestoga Winds Greet 12-Boat Fleet in 2022 Ontarios

What a wonderful regatta the Conestoga SC provided June 11-12. The eight roughly 40-minute races on Lake Conestoga were challenging and competitive. Winds were quite variable and twitchy, with some lighter winds but gusts to 14 knots, making for some interesting choices deciding if and and when to hoist the spinnaker.

Even with the variable winds, racing remained very competitive. A number of races ended with 3 or 4 boats within a boatlength of each other.  The close racing was further reflected in the final results which showed ten of the twelve entries with at least one top-six finish.

No doubt about the Gold, however, as Parry Sound's Sue Pilling and Steph Romaniuk repeated as winners of both the Warm Water with its attendant Carling Trophy and the Ontario Championship which they won last year at the Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club. Sue and Steph finished their series with an outstanding score of 11 points that included five firsts.

Wayfarer newcomers, Ross Thompson with his son Eric, sailing a brand new Mk 4 out of Mississauga SC,  finished a dazzling second. Given their wonderful debut performance that left them "seedless", the Thompsons were awarded a Hans Gottschling Wayfarer bag.

Dave Hansman and David Richardson of North Bay finished 3rd overall just one point back of the Thompsons,
while Most Improved honours went to Jan d'Ailly and Tom Legrady of the host club.

Hospitality at the Warm Water was outstanding as usual, with a Spanish Paella dinner cooked on site along with tapas appetizers prepared by Alannah d'Ailly and a Spanish cheese cake and almond dessert prepared by Dorothy Lillace, Alannah's sister.  Special thanks to both Alannah and Dorothy. Everything was delicious.

Photos are being sent to Al for posting. For those interested, here is a video of the finish of the last race that led to a protest.
