The second reach:
Jesse
Dann with Andrew Marsters pursues Charles McLaughlin
with Bill Hibbard. ... |
Conrad once again ... |
the second reach: an
overview ... |
The wind shifts aft on
the
second reach and Jesse quickly wings the jib and begins
to make inroads
on Charles McLaughlin who,
I believe, was
helming for Bill Hibbard. ... |
(l to r) Stu
Cond,
Alfred Gawthrop, Steven Vail in a nice puff on the
second reach ... |
Near the leeward mark:
the
leaders are already heading upwind again as the main
body of the fleet
prepares for ... ... |
... some hot action
around
the leeward mark. To the right, we can see Colin Junkin
and Heather
Wood in second place, being loosely covered by Uncle Al.
This would be
Colin's best race of the series as he and Heather took a
fine 5th. ... |
Stu Cond (1301),
Steven
Vail (1140) and Alfred Gawthrop (2767) round in a bunch,
closely
followed by ... ... |
... Peter Foster
(1979)
and Eric Kirby (2469). Looking at Eric's luffing
mainsail reminds me
that my crew, Marc, regularly gets the jib mostly in
as we round onto a
beat, then quickly reaches in to trim my mainsheet
hand over hand
before handing it back to me. This only takes him
about two seconds and
lets me concentrate on my steering instead of
laboriously trying to use
my one free hand to get the main in, or taking the
chance of letting
the tiller go while I use both my hands.
... |
A beat, a run and a
beat
later, it's Marc and Al all alone at the finish after
they have done a
fine job of shift playing and gust management. ... |
The spectators are
still
enjoying the action while ... ... |
... Al slips overboard
for
a refreshing dip in the cool, clean waters of the St.
Joseph Channel on
this increasingly hot afternoon. ... |
It's a fine 2nd for
Steve
and Andrew Macklin, while another light-weight team ... ... |
... John Kupers with
daughter, Laura, scoops up third place. ... |
Yet another light crew
feels the effects of the gusty day as Kipp and Ann cross
4th ahead of
... ... |
... Colin Junkin with
Heather Wood (929) and Jim Hill with Alice (1236), who
in turn will be
followed across the line by Becky Sylvester and Andrew Bignell in 7th. ... |
Richard Warren (2762)
will
emerge from this group to edge out Peter Foster (1979,
2nd from left)
for 8th place ... ... |
... while Stu Cond (1901, far right) will
take 10th place. ... |
For Charles McLaughlin (1186) it will be a
12th, his best
race of the series. ... |
Mac Thomas (1142)
edges
Alfred Gawthrop for 13th. ... |
Eric Kirby (2469)
beats out
1140, Steven Vail, despite having his traveller down to
leeward of the
centreline which kills your pointing and should only be
used in true
survival conditions, i.e. massive waves and howling
winds. |
