A bit of a slow gybe for Steve and Andrew who have hit a lull at the mark but remain comfortably ahead.
...

The fight for 2nd is an entirely different matter though, with half a dozen boats all arriving packed together.

With admirable mental toughness, Marc and Al (3854) waited until they got close to the mark
before making their last-minute dash through the wind shadows to ...

... round inside and just ahead of John (2136) and move into 2nd place.
...

This is one of the few times it pays to go well high of the rhumb line. For Al this is the fastest way out of the dead air caused by the boats near the mark. Above, John and Laura (2136) are rounding 3rd ahead of Mike and Kirk (628).

...

Not the greatest of legs for Kipp and Anne (1336) who drop to 6th after Colin and Heather (929) get the inside on the gybe. Andrew and Dave (282) will round 7th but will remain in a fine attacking position, well within reach of all but the first-place boat.   for full size pic, click here - use Back button to return to this page

Nearing the leeward mark, Al (3854) has consolidated his grip in 2nd while the boats behind have been busy taking each other up. But Al has a lot of catching up to do on Steve (523, above) who is already well underway up his second beat. Luckily for us pursuers, there continue to be lots of shifts and flat spots, so we do have some hope of eating into Steve's lead.
...

Beat #2: Colin (929) and Andrew (282) wisely try the early starboard tack which is in its favoured phase here.
Meantime, Three (1257) and Eric (2469) approach the leeward mark.
...

Mike tacks onto a nice port-tack lift part way up the beat.
...

Further to the right, a starboard lift leaves (l to r) Andrew, Jim and Jake all well placed
to challenge current leader, Steve Macklin, who is somewhere off to the left fighting with Al.
...

It's a head-to-head battle here between Jake and Jesse Dann, and Jim and Alice Hill (Hagar).
...

Charles McLaughlin and Bill Hibbard look great as ...
...

... they chomp along on a nicely lifted ...
...

... port tack.
...

Again outpointing their opponents regularly, Jim and Alice (r) made their move on this second beat, taking ...
...

... the lead near the end of the ...
...

... second beat.
...

But it was a narrow lead as ...
...

... Uncle Al (hitching up his shorts yet again!) and Marc were in close pursuit.
...

It cheers Marc and Al to see that Hagar's main is ...
...

... very slow to be let out to its full potential. Easy for Al to say: with his 3/16" mainsheet
and Harken 082 bullet blocks, his main shoots out the moment it's uncleated!!
...

Also still a big threat were Steve and Andrew Macklin (523) who ...
...

... in fact ended up with the last laugh on this run, passing Al who in turn had passed Jim about 1/3 of the way down the leg. In the end, all three of these boats rounded within about five seconds of each other onto the final beat to the finish.
...

Also still in contention were the 4-5-6 boats starting the run: Kipp (1336), Andrew (282) and Three.
