to make a big comeback if he is to remain in contention for the Silver Medals. .. |
|
Another
of the top contenders
that needs
a comeback is Søren Jensen (10212). Here, near the
leeward mark,
he will test Annette's crewing talents to the max by
carrying his spi
as
long as possible in order to keep buoy room on
Christian Bovet and Lone
Holm Hansen who are moving very well in 5128, and
also to keep Jacob
Kragh
Knudsen (beige hull) from getting an inside overlap.
.. |
|
Looks
like Søren has
succeeded
as Christian (5128) and Jacob (1130) will round
astern of him. Off to
the
left, it appears that Bo Christensen (2042) is
sailing into a knock
(skraller??)
while Steen Madsen - not far away! - is in a
different wind and knocked
on port tack! Having a good battle with an
unidentifiable boat just
behind
him is Per Christoffersen (4633, red and white
spiler) I'm not sure who
the boat behind 1130 is.

|
Also
heading right are Mr. Fogh (r)
who will point better once his main and (especially)
his jib come in a
bit more,
and Torben Haslund with Søren
Christensen
(5558) who are having by far their best race of the
DM. Could that be
Anders
Friis in the lead off to the left? Or is it Poul
Ammentorp in anden
plads? .. |
|
A very
flat mainsail on 5558 -
probably
perfect for Furesøen. The jib seems to have a real
"hook" in the
leech which can't be helping much, and - judging
from the look of the
slot
between main and jib - a bit of overtrimming of the
jib is making
matters
worse. Torben and Søren do have the boat nice and
flat and are
sitting
close together as they should!
.. |
|
The
"Unknown Sailors", Fogh and
Bjerregaard,
in W6137 have a little hook in their jib leech also.
This puff is a
poor
time for the crew to be inboard getting the beer. I
take it back: It's
never a poor time to be getting the beer - the helm
should be leaning
out
(hænge) to do his bit for the boat speed and
well-being.

|
Notice
the difference between
Søren's
jib leech and the hooks on 5558 and 6137 in the
previous pictures! And
the slot between main and jib looks flawless as
Søren and
Annette
concentrate on catching Poul and Irene in 239. In a
situation such as
this,
it is tempting pinch (sail too close to the wind)
but the veteran
Søren
is too smart for that!

Quick -
who has the right of
way here?
Jacob (beige hull, Perlen) in on port and so
must keep clear of
Jørgen Vekslund (r). Any course alteration
by the latter
however, must leave Jacob room to keep clear. There
won't be much
undisturbed wind left for poor Jacob as he
passes through the lee of Ib Lykke (2), Per
Christoffersen (red and
white
spi), Jørgen in 1741 and even our Dutch team of Ton
Jaspers and
Giel Bloks right behind Jørgen.

Joel Bøgh
(centre
left)
appears to have taken over anden plads from Poul (far
right)
with
a nice port tack lift (rummer?) that is also being
enjoyed by Christian
Bovet in 5128 who has Lone getting the pole ready
for the final run
which
begins once they round the mark at the far left.
Poul has been headed
but
not as much as Steen Madsen in 9067 who must be
getting tempted to tack!
.. |
|
.. |
|
So who has
the right of way
here? What
tack is Per Christoffersen (4633) on? Since Jacob
(1130) is on
starboard
while Per is on port, Per must keep clear - but again,
the starboard
boat
(1130) is bound by 16.2
not to change course in such a way that 4633
immediately has to respond
- f. eks. if Jacob gets a big header (skraller) on
starboard here, he
is
not allowed to bear away if that action will force
4633 to immediately
alter course to keep clear.

they can be ready to hike out more in the puff that is coming towards them now. .. |

Trivia: Puff is German for brothel/whore house/red light house/cat house/house of ill repute, etc. |
